My fave would be the Arp 2600. it did every thing I want it to, and it was always fun to mess with it. Now most of my gear has DCO's instead of the voltage controlled gear (which is fantastic as now I don't have to retune the synth after playing it for 40 minutes or whenever it decides to warm up and is much more reliable) or VA's. While I miss the real analog punch sometimes, when i think about all the work that went into just maintaining the synths instead of playing them, I'm much happier with their modern counterparts. More options, more sounds, and easier to control (no more wondering whether is a v/o scale or +/-5v scale, or CV, or DIN Sync, or some awful combination of the sorts) just plain old Midi which still ties all my systems together.

Analog gear has the "look" and "sound", but I rarely take any of my gear out of my studio, and once every instrument has been processed, you loose it into the mix anyway.

Still looks great on the table though.

I just put my hands on it quite randomly to create melodies!

As for the quality of CW synths. Well some of the older stock synths aren't on par with the real thing, but the Zarg stuff, the Minimax, the Ligthwave...those synths really have as much quality as hardware synths.
If you want an anlog synth, there are several things to take in mind. How much do you want to spend on it? Do you need it to be polyphonic? Do you need MIDI? And then it's down to what sound do you prefer. If you want to read a bit more about analog synths, try vintagesynth.com they have pretty much every synth (vintage and new) covered in their database. Very good site, with pretty pictures as well.

thanks for participation. i guess i will buy an oberheim 8 or 12 or a jupiter 6 or alesis andromeda (btw is it possible to use the andromenda as a stereo filter box and a is it possible routing 3 or more oscillators to a monovoice?).
i also will give the virus, nordlead 2 3 a try.

please go on with further recommendations.

Analogs I own that I can strongly recommend:

Oberheim Matrix-12 (Expander would be a better/cheaper choice since the M-12 keyboard is crap).

Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter: But only if you can also get the Hardware Programmer for it (knobs & sliders for every param!).

The softsynth and Creamware Juno emulations don't quite live up to the sound of my original 106, but that didn't stop me selling it so I could raise cash for a Virus C. Very happy I did!

I've never owned a genuine ARP or Moog, but used to love to fiddle around with a friend's MemoryMoog in the mid 80s.

NEARLY bought the SmartElectronix clone instead of the Virus C. Probably would have if I didn't already have the M12 and MKS80.

Having said all this, the unit that gets the most work in my rig is the K2600RS. Not analog but man is it sweet.

MKS80 Super-Jupiter + programmer. I had a little rack box with just that in it. Mmmmmm.... beautiful. I used to love even just looking at it
