Nestor and Company - I was misunderstood. I just meant "best sounding song" in layman's terms - as in "good song" not having to do with mixing/engineering. By this I mean, technical musicianship is not always good - it can often get in the way. The Beatles made some of the "best sounding songs" but they were not exactly the best musicians to grace popular music. That was what I meant. Sorry about that.

That's cool Algorythm!

Anyway, I think organizing contests like this regularly is a great way to keep people interested, challenged and active. It keeps us on the edge, forces us to hone skills that might not be used in our everyday routine.

Maybe John could start a Contest Suggestion thread and select one randomly every month?

Right, now I follow you Algo.

Another little idea: it would be nice that the winners had to open a little Workshop as Chris Werner did, into the Pulsar Study area, explaining how they did what they did, why, etc., for everybody to learn the best working ways. What do you think?

Looks like I'll have to push the envelope a little with my puny three DSP's on my beloved Elektra.......

I managed to get the Plasma up and running if I disabled the mixer and everything else and only used one channel, and I had room for a delay-unit and EQ, and maybe even a compressor too

I was wondering, may I cutup sampled bits from the plasma and the synths in Cubase, and rearrange the bits?

Cheers!
Thomas

Yes, i think you can, since the sound source is still one of the 4 (inferno, bluesynth, Plasma, EDS8i).

You can obviously record them, track'em, loop'em, etc!

The rules are simple :
1-ONLY Pulsar effects
2-ONLY sound sources permitted are those 4 source mentioned.
3-The song should NOT be longer than 5min.
4-When you upload it here, it should be a 16bits 44.1khz @ 128k/sec MP3

I hope i have it right

Thanks for the answer!

Hmm... just to be sure, I was talking about wavediting, is that permitted? I mean the alternation of sound might be too severe.

I'd suppose if the effects used for "wave-editing" is from pulsar, then it should be ok. Not effects from wavelab or soundforge etc.

err.. maybe you were talking about granular and stuff? In that case I think that the granular synthesis would become a sound source itself, even if it's based on the plasma or whatever.. and that would out of bounds.
It's kind of hard to differenciate though.. like what's granular and what's "chopping up" cuz granular IS chopping up anyway.. but just be considerate.. ya know. The main point is to use the sonic capability of the mensioned synths.. not a mangling contest.

Does that just about round it up? Algo?

sounds 'bout right. I'm more about the spirit of the law than its letter though - stutter FX are definitely in as far as wave editing goes, but stay away from time/pitch manipulation, granular, etc. - don't get too crazy with the mangling - tweak synths and MIDI data instead!

Thanks I think I got now

I was just asking, cause I'm pretty limited with only 3 DSP's and the synths choosed.

I'll be back

You could use only one at a times, record it in asio, then play the other one, etc...

I use 4 inferno, 4 bluesynth, each with 3 or more voices, you think i can do that with 7 dsp? Plus the Plasma... nooo  I record them, one by one, then set the voice number to zero...

Yeah I know, but I'm just not used to work like that. I like to hear everything at the same time, cause I seldom know were I'm going, so I tend to do work on all tracks at the same time. But in this case I'll have to do it as you say...... Man I need more DSP-power

I understand how you feel Petal.. I had a very hard time thinking of different parts without the actual sound.. but it makes you think very hard about the logistics behind the music.. and now that I'm used to it, I can think of nonsense looped material that makes sense after I've chopped it up and re-ordered it. Not too efficient, but it's nonetheless a strange way to compose! hehe.

You never know.. the ultimate DSP is up there, in your head! You may not need extra DSPs afterall! (well, maybe some of us do.   )

Petal, I have the same problem than you having just 4 DSPs. What I do sometimes, when I can’t work directly with the synths I would like to work with, is to load some samples, sounding as close to the sound of the synth I’m willing to work with, as possible. When I have all the MIDI recorded, then I start to build projects for the different synths I want to record into wav, so I record them but just before it, I do some automation if needed, that of course, would not work the same way in a sample as in a synth, particularly when you want some opening and closing timbers. Then you hear the whole and you can always apply some EQ to reach your liking when hearing.

I didn’t know we could use the EDS8i, I though the only allowed drum synth was the Plasma. Am I wrong?

Please Algo, reconfirm the instruments here, thanks.

EDS8i is not mentioned on the original devices list, so it doesn't partitcipate...

You can include STS, if you sample from Bluesynth/Inferno/Plasma. So actually there's 3 real sound sources. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The clock's tickin' people... tick tock tick tock
and the bassdrum's kickin'... boom boom boom
well, maybe not.

Man, y'all work 'till the last moment! It scares me, to imagine the kind of quality we're going to get. I'm sure we're in for some surprises!

And boy oh boy is creamware and hummel synths going to be happy when the hear the results.
