Seeing it's so quiet around here I was just wondering who else is entering the contest?

I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. It reminds me of the old Commodore 64 "tracker" competitions. You had to squeeze every drop of power out of a very limited system (3 channels, <64K of RAM and NO MIDI!) I guess we shouldn't complain!

Thanks for a great opportunity Algo. Looking forward to hearing all the entries...

Well, i'm working on it since to first day this annoncement came in. At first, just out of curriosity about what i could do with this kind of limitation, and now cuz i'm having loads of fun with bluesynth+inferno! I have choose the hummel version for both of them so far.

If you go and check in project forum, i've uploaded the recording of Plasma-techno9 preset as a STS program for those with less dsp. Cuz plasma use alot of it... It's recorded at 32bits/44.1khz using sts.

I'm just wondering though.. that even those with Pulsar II (like me) would need to use the Plasma as samples? Does Plasma, bluesynth and inferno all load at the same time?

BTW Ken, it is the Plasma drum synth of Hummel we're talking about no the prisma synth.

And with my pulsar1+Luna2, a can barely load them all at the same times. If i put 3voices on the bluesynth + the PT96-free verb, now i'm at full load.

But using the sts2000p with 4 voices (loading a sampled preset of the plasma), i can have bluesynth with 5voices, and inferno with 3voices + obviously the very good pt96-free verb of Paul + stm1632.

I think that's enough. Using some multitracking techniques, you can do whatever is needed, no problem!

Ken - Even though I have more than 6 DSP's in my setup, I can see from the DSP usage that the three synths should fit comfortably in a Pulsar II. I'm only using the CW version of Inferno though, so your mileage may vary.

Speaking of which...

Marcus - In your opinion, is there much benefit in using the Hummel version of Inferno? I know it sounds lazy, but my DAW isn't networked to my Internet computer and I want to avoid the hassle of downloading and transferring the device via disk if it's not much improvement on the CW version.

Oops! Regarding DSP usage, I didn't think of polyphony and FX... I'll shut up and let Marcus do the straight talking

Ive gone back to the eds8i, as it sounds better than what I'm able to sample from plasma. - I'm not very good at sampling, perhaps.
Anyway, I'm going with 1 voice HummelInferno, 1 voice MehdiBlue and eds8i.
Much fun, 4 chips

The biggest (only?) difference i noticed in hummel's inferno is the envolope follower for the filter and pitch. So you can do in hummel's version some nice 'DnB' bass.

In the hummel's bluesynth, i didn't notice what was the difference (i just didn't look for it), but since it is the first one i tried and found the sound i wanted, i just kept it. BTW, i didn't find the medhi's bluesynth, is it here on planetz?

And Wayne, for sampling the Plasma, use STS, it's perfect for this, can samples in 32bits for keeping all the dynamics of this little (not so little btw) drummachine. The sound is almost the same as the real plasma for me.

You can compare my recording with the realthing, they have the exact same sonority and timbre, volumes, dynamics.

But, in the sampler, you will have less control over the sound, that's for sure. And that's also why synth will always exist, even if you can sample every synths.

Anyway, if somebody needs another preset sampled, or their own, send your request to me, i'll sample it for you no problems. All internaly recorded by SFP (sts recorder) in 32bits/44.1khz.

I'll try to do other preset of it tonight, i'll post them in preset & tools forums.

C Ya all!

Hi to all,
mehdi's blue synth is on planetz, the "Pulse synth" is exactly the same with portamento.

Retro, I just loaded both Blues on a separate channel each - they sound completely different (on same presets).
Well worth the effort. The Hummel version is much smoother with filter control and has a more punchy sound, the original is thin and scratchy compared to it. The Hummels also have portamento and glide which the originals lack.

cheers, Tom

from the hummel-bluesynth post in devices forum here:
- new oscillators featuring sync
- noise generators (white/ pink)
- much wider transposition range
- new glide (portamento) feature in global
- new 4-Pole filters, including lowpass, highpass and bandpass
- cleaner amp envelope
- smoother controls on filter cutoff and volumes
- more blue!

Question... I've only played with plasma a little bit and noticed a strange aspect to the program. It seems as though you can select multiple voices, yet I can only figure out how to use one drum tone at a time? Haven't checked my DSP meter yet, but my question is, is it possible to squeeze multiple tones out of one plasma, or do you have to open up multiple units (hence people wanting to use samples)?

Thanks to everyone for your advice on the Hummel synths. I'll definitely give them a try.

dehuszar - I'm not sure what your problem could be, but I'm having no trouble getting multiple voices from the Plasma. Have you checked that the necessary Plasma outputs are wired to your mixer in the routing window?

it is definitely possible to get multiple tones out of plasma at once - each perc-synth channel has a MIDI note - you are sending it the right info, right?

yeah samuel, you only need one voice. you can set the notes below the knobs of each drumsound.
