A place to talk about whatever Scope music/gear related stuff you want.

SC DSPs and Native Cubase processing Power .... Question :)

Post by Yogimeister »

Small Noob-ish questions ... :)

I run a Luna Card (As single Audio/MIDI I/O) with Cubase.

Will adding an additional card increase my "native cubase" processing power?
(As in - lower my "ASIO" meter)?

Is it possible to run native VST plugins using the card's DSPs (Not Scope FX via XTC) ?

Thanks,
YOgi

the Scope hardware doesn't have any influence on Asio streaming-processing, except (of course) the 'logic controller' on the interface card.
Native plugins are compiled in X86 machine code, while the DSPs on the card process 'their' native machine code.

So there is absolutely no possibility for any of the systems to execute the other's code.

But you might want to add another card to power-up the Luna a bit... ;)
It's only got minimum 'power' for a (relatively) simple mix job.

The quality is great though - and realtime monitoring can be quite smart. Depends on your application, but it CAN do 'tricks' only a few (and expensive) cards can do in native environment. 2nd hand cards are extremely cheap atm... and provide additional IO, too.
As you write you're new to the environment, you may find that a lot of Scope (stock) effects compete with very(!) expensive native solutions.
Don't even think of comparing those to what's 'stock' in Cubase... ;)

cheers, Tom

Yeah ... Barely used it for anything serious really .... Tried running some XTC stuff but the Luna can barely handle synths not to mention mixdowns ...

The most I did was try to mix through the Luna (almost no Inserts - and no Verb ofcourse) as the summing is supposed to be good ....
Didn't really hear any difference vs. in-the-box mixdown ...

Anyway, the thing is - I have been hitting my ASIO processing limit harder as I am doing more heavy mixes and using heavier synths ....
(Yay!)

I am thinking og getting an additional card and using them as sendFX, groupBusses and maybe some XTC/Scope synths .....

And in case I actually fall in love with the plugins (People were raving about the modular and other FX when I bought it ... but it was like 10 years ago ... ;)

in general, Scope processing is superior. you may prefer any particular vst effect better, which is also good.

If I only had a Luna and Cubase, I would mix in Cubase then pass the entire mix to Scope, which would just be running one or two mastering plugs.

At least MASTERIT then whatever limiter/compressor with any remaining DSP. Maybe Optimaster if you dont have any 3rd party mastering.

Then you'll hear the difference.
