Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
My friend said it took him 6 months to learn Live. I'm just so used to Cubase. I really like it. I don't have to think when I use it. The new "expression" track is going to be excellent for orchestral samples. It means you can more easily add and alter articulations. Live isn't going to have anything like that. My impression is that the midi implementation of Live is minimal. It seems more for loops. That is not the kind of music I am doing now.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
yeah, the MIDI editing in Live is a bit on the poor side... Very nice MIDI plug-ins, though, and they seem to be developing the MIDI side a lot. Check out the Live8 video on their website! Live started out as an audio-only app, and it didn't interest me much then, as it looked like Acid. It's got MIDI since V.4 only. It's not completely true about it being a loop-only thing - you can actually work with it in a very similar way to Cubase, and it's very powerful and simple - even though it has depth, it won't take you more than a week to figure out the basics, being, as you are, already literate in computer sequencing. All is in the open, no need for many windows or menus, and comes with some great tutorials on board. And excellent costumer support too, unlike Steinberg. But hey, I'm not a sales rep for Ableton! You should use what feels right to get what you want quickly.
Personally, I think Cubase's MIDI is probably one of the best, if not the best there is on a sequencer app. I miss the list editor, and the MIDI tools, like sine wave, envelopes and stuff. I wouldn't have left it if it worked well, but I just lost patience with C4, and after I made the switch, I never felt the need to go back. The synths in C4 are based on Virsyn Tera (which I have), I do not use Halion, and I have a healthy selection of VSTs that fit any host. Besides, my favorite plug-in from SX (the A1) was dropped in C4, and I have better processors in Scope (like SPL, BX, DAS comps, etc.). I also have Melodyne, Battery and loads of other sh*t I collected
Strong points in C4's audio engine are multiple takes in a track, the group tracks, and some very nice editing tools - but Live8 will bring some of those goodies too.
Maybe in a few months or so, if all goes well, I'll do the upgrade. For now, I'm going to explore C4.5.2 as a multitrack mixer for my Ableton-generated audio tracks and see how it does. Anyway, my partners in crime all use PT, so that may be a better option (for me) in terms of project compatibility. But good luck with C5, do let us know how it works, maybe I'll see you there

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
Well, I only used SX to transfer my 32/5.1 ALL files to C4 - so I'd never used the A1.Tau wrote: Besides, my favorite plug-in from SX (the A1) was dropped in C4,

All I did was to copy it into the VST plug-ins folder so I have got it now.
The thing I miss is the list tempo track funnily enough. I know the graphic one is better but somehow I miss that little feature.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
I was just on the phone with Yamaha.
Cubase 5 will be shipping "probably in late February".
The cost for the upgrade from Cubase 3 or Cubase 4 is $199 USD.

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
If you bought c4 in the last 2 month the update will be 49€ i heard.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
2 months isn't a very fair grace period tbh. 6 months would be fair. 12 months would be even fairer.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
Ableton version upgrades cost that much aswell....Not that this is making it any better but it is how it is.

Ok enought offtopic...

Actually, €149.

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
FWIW, the grace period upgrade price is only EUR 19.90.
here's a quote from their website:-

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
^__^ Ok so its a few bucks less.
They update very frequent tho.

Wow ok, that is really nice!Shroomz~> wrote:FWIW, the grace period upgrade price is only EUR 19.90.

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P

If they'd thought about it clearly, they could have made customers very happy with a grace period scale. Something like:-
3 months - EUR 19
6 months - EUR 69
12 months - EUR 119

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
Yeah, I bet they DID think about it - with EURO tinted glasses...Fluxpod wrote:I bet they thought about it.Its yamaha now tho and they are hardliners about update prices.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
I don't find the upgrade price to be expensive but I wish that they were less frequent. Version 5 has more features I need than previous upgrades. The SX 3 version was my least favorite recent upgrade. That one seemed like just a money grab.
Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
that's why a company like Yamaha doesn't put all of it's developements into a upgrade. that way, they have something to put in the next upgrade, and can charge money again. smart, but evil.
they understand how the mind works and have teams of marketers to discover a way to use trickery to get you to spend money and feel grateful to get to do it.
perhaps, this will be an upgrade i take advantage of, but at the current rate of renumbering, perhaps it won't be until Cubase 7....

Re: Cubase 5 is upon us. :P
I am interested in all the new features but especially VST Expression and the new tempo track which seem specifically geared towards orchestral music.
Low latency for all
Cubase 5 takes full advantage of the latest WASAPI* audio driver technology in Microsoft Windows Vista and supports generic and on-board sound hardware with lower latencies than ever before.
Gary you said I would have bad performance from onboard S/PDIF, we will see
and they finally added a good drum machine!
New automation handling (seems about time for this one too)
