I currently run a E6420 @3.2 GHz and it performs very well. lots of CPU power, stable and easy overclocking, but runs relatively cool with low power consumption.
For A/V workstations I would prefer Intel, AMD makes gread CPUs too, but the Intel chipsets / boards IMO are still much better and mor compatible the the AMD stuff.

I just bought and set up a Asus P5K deluxe with Intel Core 2 Quad, and 4 gig Corsair Ram. Kicks like it's on steroids...
Only thing is. You need a pcie graphics card wich will overlap PCI slot 1 (if it got the silent cooler rib attached). This leaves you with PCI 2 and 3 for your pulsar boards and a really cramped space. I guess I might experiensing heat issues wich I (you) need to address.
Another issue is if you really need all the features the Deluxe issue gives you (2xgblan, wifi, etc..) I found myself turning of these features beacause of Pulsar stability.. But then againg the bios support 2 bios profiles which makes this board handy with a dual boot XP (one for Scope and one for other other stuff).
Why not Quad? Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh...174 loaded SSL comp in cubase and only 50%cpu
