don't these two plugs do pretty much the same thing? So you're actually double-compressing your mix? Seems a bit strange to me...

I used that series couple of times too. Optimaster is too transparant, but has some xtra features. STW's compressor is da bomb, great for hot mixed dance music.

Not even close. (A lingeri shop without a window?)
Optimaster is a multiband compressor/limiter, and is pretty transperant.
Timeworks MasterComp is singleband, and it "colors" the sound somewhat...

On my last mastering job I "tripple-compressed":
Vinco-> Optimaster-> VintagEQ-> MasteringComp (Hard)
Different compressors = Different sound and function.
I added the Vinco in addition to my usual setup in order to get the same effect that I usually get from the SSL mix compressor...
(With a quite pleasing result.)

That's a question I 've been meaning to ask Kim.What type of compressors are the software ones trying to emulate and how.I.E OPTO VCA FET?

ah, I thought the Timeworks was a multiband too. My mistake. Can you maybe post some mp3 of how it sounds? I'm interested to hear the result of so much compression

Vinco is clearly an 1176 clone. (FET based Solid State Limiting Amplifier)
In addition Vinco also has a softclip limiter, and the possibility to use RMS detection.
Use: On almost anything you want to have that "vintage compressor" sound.

D-Mute D-Comp is functionally much the same as Vinco, but not as "analog-sounding".
(But then again, it's free!)

Timeworks CompressorX doesn't seem to be modelled after one particular compressor. (Maybe Focusrite Red 3 ?)
It can do both RMS and peak detection, soft and hard ratio, and brick wall limiting. It is able to sound really transparent or "pumping" depending on settings.
Use: When you want more control over compression or more transperant sound.

The Optimaster resembles a Finalizer mostly. (Digital multiband compressor+limiter)
Use: Mastering. Can also be useful on submixes of drums, voices and beats.

Final Liza is a (simple) digital multiband compressor.

Timeworks MasteringCompressor Hard is a digital "loudness maximizer", using softclip compression and brickwall limiting. Responds much like a hardknee compressor, and sounds transparent if not overused.
Use: Mastering. (Or anything else you want "maximized".)

Timeworks MasteringCompressor Soft has the same functionality as the Hard version, but responds more like a softknee compressor and has build-in bass enhancer and high frequency "smoother". (Sounds a bit like transferring your mix to a high-end analog recorder to me.)
Use: Mastering. (Or anything else you want "maximized" and "analog-enhanced".)

The Sharc One is using the CompressorX algorithm without the brickwall limiter.
In addition there's a modified version of Creamware's softclip limiter...

Is it possible to "push in" all of the ratio buttons to get the 80:1 compression ratio like on the real version & TDM/RTAS plugins?

No, unfurtunatly all buttons mode is not available in Vinco. Don't know why. In fact the ratio is not 80:1 but goes to somewhere between 12:1 and 20:1 ( http://www.uaudio.com/webzine/april/tex ... tent4.html )

Actually Kim, after reading this thread,I've been meaning to try the Mastercomp soft and hard together instead of using a limiter. Anyone done this?
