Onboard sound

Anyone using onboard sound together with SFP?
I have a P4B 533C. I am thinking of using the onboard sound (WDM drivers) on a 98 partition to run certain programs and the SFP on an XP partition. Opinions . I would have to enable onboard sound in the bios and reset the jumper. Would that cause a problem with SFP?

I´ve got a second multimedia card beside my pulsars and have no problems. I have to switch from one card to the other in the win multimedia settings only. Same should be with on board soundcards.

I still have my sblive in for simple tasks since the wav drivers (used to be) less stable than the asio/etc. As long as they don't share an interrupt and I don't use the two simultaniously I never have problems. And SFP.exe is always running even when using the sblive, I just don't use the sblive as a 2nd card in Logic.

Do you have them running on the same partition? I want to install them on separate partition. As I said an XP and a 98 partition.

I have the same mobo. Don't remember which slot exaclty shared IRQ's with the onboard audio. I tried the onboard audio for a while for mp3's etc, have to try it again soon. I had disabled it cos of OS crashes upon playing of mp3, later it appeared to be SFP bèta driver. Next reboot, i'll give the onboard audio another chance...

My Luna11 is in slot 2. I had IRQ 5 assigned to it. The onboard soundcard also took that IRQ. I have since reassigned the Luna11 to IRQ 9 in the same slot. Now it works very well with the onboard sound. It seems as though most onboard soundcards would hug IRQ 5.

I use onboard audio (asus P4E or something like that) with no problem. Just make sure it doesn't share IRQ. I need it for video editing.

I will soon do the same, since I have the ASUS P4PE, they say it's a good quality sound, can't really tell yet, cos I haven't heard it myself. We'll see.

Are you going to use something like partition magic? I use this for the different partitions. Any cards that are not being used I just disable in the relevant windows installation.

I did not use Partition Magic. I had my HD formated Fat 32 first with a 98 installation. Then I made a NTFS partition and installed XP. I am using the onboard sound with Win 98 and SFP on XP. XP makes partitions good as PM. The only difference is you can save your OS and information on your system with PM when creating partition.

I got the ASUS P4PE and I found I got an undesirable amount of "computer noise" coming through on the output when using the onboard sound device. ("computer noise" = quiet clicks when moving the mouse, hard drive noise, fan noise, etc.) I was actually not surprised at this!

So I went and bought a SB Audigy 2 Platinum. Still get the expected hiss from the noise floor but no "computer noise" anymore. I'm happy.

This is in with 2 Scopes and a Pulsar 2 all using slots 3 to 6 of the P4PE - NO PROBLEM!

I thought the onboard sound device would be quite cool at first, specifically being designed in and not having to get a sound card such as the SB but my experience has left me doubting the onboard sound stuff on any motherboard really.

I am quite glad that I haven't actually had many problems putting my system together but the onboard sound device of the P4PE... I don't think this was actually anything I have done wrong. But, still, other people may not have had this problem.

I'd say stay away from the onboard stuff. Get yourself a nice new PCI soundcard that suits your needs. (If you go for the Audigy 2 read the Creative forum under Audigy discussion/Hardware discussion before you do! - i.e. Don't go for it if you have a VIA chipset/Network card/Win XP combination) I bought it on the off-chance and, touchwood, it's been fine so far (Win 98/No Network gear).
