We're coming a poor third to NI and Propellorhead
Has anyone been over to the NI (Reaktor) site lately? Reaktor 3 is looking pretty impressive:
http://www.native-instruments.de/englis ... eview.html#
And on their download page they have 630 (yes, that's 630) devices for download including several new ones uploaded to the site on ANY particular day you care to visit. There's no JPEGs, but have a look and feel depressed:
http://www.native-instruments.com/cgi-b ... library.pl
Where can you go for something similar for ModV2? Nowhere. Try the dead old graveyard that is PlanetZ and you'll find this:
http://www.planetz.com/Pulsar/PerformanceModular.html
Last updated December 14th 1999. Wow. And it's Modular 1.
Go here for "site update" news:
http://www.planetz.com/Pulsar/Updates.html
It's exciting stuff - the last update was almost a year ago.
Then try the "wishlist" area. Seems a bit better since the last post was only three months ago.
http://www.planetz.com/Pulsar/WishList.html
But of course this is just a post wishing for something, it isn't actually any development or something you can use. And look a little closer and you'll see that the last response to an item by Creamware was April 13th 1999. Lazy dogs, they just don't give a damn anymore - that's more than two years ago.
Laughing yet? No, neither am I and I LOVE ModV2.
It doesn't get better. Have a look here:
http://www.planetz.com/Pulsar/Patches.html
A miserable four uploads in the past year.
I can't even find any ModV2 patches here. Ben Walker's site over at Modular Corner is much better:
http://www.modularsynth.co.uk/
But are we really relying on one guy to prop up Creamware?
Speaking of which, what have they offered lately? Absolutely bloody nothing is the answer. Have a look:
http://www.creamware.de/en/home/news/default.asp
Just a load of crap they want to sell and a few lousy MP3 examples. Their software download pages consists of multiple bug fixes.
I'm a big fan of Pulsar but it seems to me that the same throb of life and energy that is invigorating NI and Propellorhead is not pumping through Creamware. What the hell have they done lately? Besides the rather lame and irrelevant XTC and the all-froth STS3000 clone called Volksampler, not much. And certainly a big fat NOTHING so far as ModV2 is concerned.
Makes me worried.

do you have any idea how time consuming the preparation of those dsp usage pages was?? i apologize for not updating them more recently, but i felt that it was enough to give people an idea of the core capabilities and dsp usage of the various pulsar components. if there was an easier way to determine dsp usage for pulsar modules, e.g. scripting, i'd be all over it.
ironically, the Updates.html page itself is out of datehttp://www.planetz.com/Pulsar/Updates.html
It's exciting stuff - the last update was almost a year ago.

anyway, some of the primary updates to the site in the last year include the reviewing system and these forums. yes you're right, at the beginning i personally contributed *much* more site content. since then, my focus has been more on allowing the community to update the site themselves (e.g. the forums, reviews, etc).
you have to remember i'm just doing this in my spare time.
well, in the beginning creamware reps used to to reply to the wishes individually, which made it much more valuable. now the wish list has really been superceded by these forums. my intention was to migrate those messages into a new forum, but again, the issue is my time. it'll take quite an effort to do it well, so i'm delaying. will do tho. Then try the "wishlist" area. Seems a bit better since the last post was only three months ago.

well, that's disappointing to me too. however, it's what you get when a piece of software is tied to an expensive piece of hardware.I'm a big fan of Pulsar but it seems to me that the same throb of life and energy that is invigorating NI and Propellorhead is not pumping through Creamware.
p.s. i'm moving this topic to "general discussion" since it's a bit more wideranging than just mod v2!!
cheers,
your humble site administrator

To be honest, it's not really Creamware's fault, there is so much stuff for Pulsar and intelligent people are scare away from contributing to the "community" because it seems to consist of people who complain more than they contribute. How long did it take you to write this post of yours? Could you have spent your time instead making a Modular2 patch and sharing it with us?
When was the last time you downloaded a free device which you found useful, and THANKED the author of the device? ...Right.
I think a lot of people (myself included) hold back from contributing since it would be such a one-way relationship. For example, look at PlanetZ, it just got BASHED and it's one of the best resources around. John stops contributing to it even the slightest, hoping the community will help fill in the gaps and instead they complain! Look at what he's given us here!
How can we change that, as a community? Perhaps we could start a thread where we post our Mod2 patch, and to respond, you must download the patch, play with it, give a meaningful intelligent feedback (ie, more than one or two sentances), and then contribute your own patch, and the next person does the same, a sort of Cycle. But how many people would actually participate?
I think with Luna2 just out in the past few months, and therefore the cost of entry into the Creamware system lowered, we may see more people joining our community. Let's encourage positive contributions, and <b>contribute yourself</b>, as dwelling on the negative aspects only hurts us all in the long run, and might scare away people with talent from sharing with us all.

True, I'd like to see more progress on the Modular 2 devices front but, on the other hand, I've tried many of the NI Reaktor User devices and found that about 3/4 of them were either very minor variations on the stock NI devices or were very buggy incomplete, original devices. That leaves a few devices that were "Okay". But I was still not blown away by their quality as compared to NI's own Premium library of devices.
Propellerheads Mods for Rebirth are carefully screened and the ones that make it onto Prop's website are very well thought out.
My point is, it's quality that counts. I would rather have one really great tool than 20 okay devices.
You're point is well taken, Modular II is fantastic but should have more third party/user input.
But on the the other hand (and I'm running out of hands) whenever somebody comes up with a challenge to the community to make more presets, or make more devices, the hands that actually get raised saying "I will" are pretty lonely out there in the crowd. SpaceF had a preset contest and, as I remember, he didn't have a whole lot of participation.

there are some mod2 patches up. see my fx machine, u/l about a month ago. i plan to u/l more. NI and reason are of course going to have more users cuz they are native. more is not necessarily better. i prefer mod2 to reaktor anyday. . . i agree that creamware should do more as far as support, or at least PRESENCE in the community. they seem much more like a detached observer than an active member to the community. did anyone see the post on the yahoo list about dspdev getting the boot by CW CEO? that is at least three 3rd parties gone in less than six months. we got that zplane crew, but if the trend continues, there will almost nothing soon. it does seem like the platform is growing stale as far as developments goes. XTC is just not for me. I would prefer them working out there friggin copy protection scheme. the sh*t is cracked, and they are still trying to hang, on probably starting that whole eprom rumor. if they wouldn't tie the SW to the HW, i would buy the STS4000. till then, no way. my pulsar I might die someday soon. i do not want my software tied to HW. subhuman, i agree that apathy is not a solution. it would be best if people put more into pulsar (modular uploads, etc). but it is better when the producer (CW) leads the way. The CEO of cubase gets in on the list every now and again. Other than Ingo (who has been silent lately), CW might as well be mute. John, i am sure that the original poster meant nothing negative towards you. i consider planetz to be a second home almost. i appreciate your efforts in making and maintaining this site. it would be swell if it got a revamp though!
my few kilobytes of rant.
now go make some fargin' music!

and subhuman - i like your idea! i am not the most advance synth designer, but i will take initiative! i will upload my drum synth over the next few days for use and review. it will not be terribly complex, but it serves a specific purpose. should someone create a thread entitled "Mod Creation and Criticisms" or similar?
this will mutually inspire us. i am up for it. a little deadline helps stuff. i am in STAND at school (Students Taking Action for a New Democracy), and it is really motivating when others are there pushing you in (and against) this apathetic world.
anyone else want to commit to modular development?

I agree, it would be cool to hear from Creamware every once and awhile (perhaps they talk more on their own Creamware Forums? I dunno, I don't ever go there, last time I checked it was a bunch of people complaining and whining)
That said, when Ingo DID come on the forums and mailing lists, he was bombarded, and he often had to say the same things over and over. You can find the answers you're looking for already by searching the archives of the Pulsar-scope list or here on PlanetZ (and/or perhaps even on the CW forums). Hopefully Ingo is instead beta testing V3, it'd probably be time better spent
The biggest problem with Pulsar might be that it gives TOO MUCH for too little. People don't know where to start, how to setup a basic project, or even how to setup their computer (I've seen people install a Pulsar into a computer with AOL, a couple simultaneously running Virus scanners running in the background, ScheduleAgent, and a host of other garbage, and then complain on forums about Creamware).
Basically what I'm saying is that although I sort of agree, Creamware has already given us all a lot of stuff to play with and very few people seem greatful or give back.

Let's not forget how much John has given us all as a Scope developer, as well, which is also only done in his spare time. It's funny that no one ever bitches to Bob Moog about lowering the price of a Mooger Fooger & yet John's given us a comparable product for $18 (funnier still is that I'm selling my mooger fooger & keeping the Z Filter
).
Has everybody considered the fact that Scope/Pulsar was, from the beginning, meant to be a self-sustaining community? By design, Creamware ought to be able to drop all but the most fundamental development for Scope/Pulsar & not make serious waves for any of us. Just look at Tripledat, it still receives necessary updates but not much else <b>because it doesn't need much else</b>. The accomplished everything they originally intended to do & that may be enough.
As for modular patches, Ben Walker & I have some interesting things in the works that we've put a lot of effort into. Anybody wish you could just find a nice Roland JD-800, let alone afford one? Yeah, we've got it, baby, & it's legit. Every waveform sampled by Ben himself, including the expansion cards (he's got cards you won't even find anywhere else). Better filters than the original. Multi-timbral. FX & presets up the anal cavity.
E Sync 2.0 ready for release. Virus emulation, A/B tested against the original. Tell me what you want, baby, I'll give it to you if you're good.
Baby.

btw, i've been developing z filter 2001, which will have all kinds of cool modulation, and something like 10 different filter types. will be more expensive (probably like a $10 upgrade for current owners). it's been nearly ready for months, but i was planning on selling it in the CW shop, and now that's all confused and uncertain, so...

i agree subhuman - most people are stupid. I too avoid the CW forums cuz of this. Pulsar userbase is small, which is the cause of the "lack of user self support," in comparison with NI and Reason, which I think is the "why" to this discussion. "Spread pulsar and motivate users" seems to be the solution. This is a bit difficult with the current copy protection and developer issues . . . see here for more on that though:

interesting thread. my $.o2 :
fantastic products. aside from a few grumbles on install probs, and the odd bug (hey, every DAW prod has their share, its all about functionality per purch $, and here CW excels), in general CW is a pretty cool company. (oh, but their user forum stinks, I guess they leave that to the "community" and JC.
which gets to my main concern. I think the pulsar community just looks too small. can't understand why CW products don't get a wider following. I've always suspected CW could do a lot better on marketing. Is this all a economics thing? Dealer support in Europe is barely fair, in North America poor. advertising in industry mags, weak. PR (based on press coverage) a bit in Europe, almost never seen them in Keyboard. etc, etc.,
Part of the reason the CW dealer following is small may be that the products are sophisticated and complex, and difficult to support. But somewhow, I think a lot of other companies (with less cool gear) make more impact in the mkt.

U are right about the way the users don't help the modular community to grow as it should.. But as there is no real information about the modules.
i have download the Sound on Sound articles about synthesis, the nord modular tutorial, the 3-4 creamware tutorials, the modular corner tips and tricks. I read and reread all these to understand the synthesis and to be able to create modular patches able to create the complex patches available on "hardware" synthesizers and used on psy trance music...
But u know i discover synthesis with reactor and simply without an expert help on some basic matters i can't go far...
A stupid example: in the beggining i didn't knew that if u connect a signal in an input the u can use that input to provide the same signal wherever u want... so i asked about the logic in connecting the mixers modules in the dspmatrix each other!! After some days i understand it myself and i got an answer 1 month later explain me something really obvious but as i said in the fisrt place i did't knew what was going on...
Has anyone read the nord tutorials? really good@! u understand what is going on inside the modules -no just u normal connect that on that- we want these things on music but if u don't know how to program a synth u are stuck on using ready patches-sounds.
Everyday i 'm excited about pulsar and the possibilities i have... but what i see is that is a small company trying to grow in an
extreme competition environment and they just can't manage it.
Just imagine a situation (utopia the most said) where "companies" compete each other and help each other - no that sitty antagonism where one is trying to fuck the other... (can we imagine any more?)

You're right Algorhythm, I intend no offense to the fair and courageous creator. This site is the heart of the Pulsar community. I visit almost every day. But in the hard world you compare like with like and, well it doesn't stack up. But in any case this thread has generated rather more praise than criticism. (Thanks John for not deleting it.)
It's true I've never uploaded a ModV2 patch. But I'll happily accept the challenge as soon as there's a comprehensible way to do it on this site, and a decent place to put them.
I've got a couple of nice big pad machines, a chord sampler and a thumping drum machine. And let's have a feedback thread connected to each device so you can click on "what other users say about this device".
At least that way if you go to the trouble of uploading you can at least get a little feedback. As I've said before, I believe the lack of a "personal stamp" on ModV2 devices is a big drawback. You download the devices you've sweated over (get paid nothing of course) give away all your best sounds and you don't even get the satisfaction of writing your initials in the corner. I suppose a few comments from your peers would probably be enough...
But I'm unrepentant about CW. They are slothful, glacial, arrogant, blinkered, pompus, self-satisfied, and probably doomed bastards who put out one of the world's great audio products.
cheers,
Spirit

To me, the Reaktor & Nord Modular shots that I've seen look even less personisable than the Modular II. But I get your point.
A 'rate/comment on this modular patch' facility would be great, but then again, how many people have actually bothered to post reviews of theyr paid-for devices? There's no more than 2-3 reviews of any device on the PlanetZ reviews page, and none at all for most of them.
How many people have sent samples, screenshots, text descriptions of their patches to my site? Only a couple. I will keep adding to the content when I get time, but if you want a whole page devoted to your favourite patch, just send me a screenshot and a text description and it'll be up there within a day or two.
I'll be trying to find ways to promote user contributions to the site later this year, but in the meanwhile - send me stuff and I'll put it up asap.
Cheers,

I will keep adding to the content when I get time, but if you want a whole page devoted to your favourite patch, just send me a screenshot and a text description and it'll be up there within a day or two.
I'll be trying to find ways to promote user contributions to the site later this year, but in the meanwhile - send me stuff and I'll put it up asap.
Cheers,
Ben

JOHN (re: zfilter)- and remember: i was one of the fellows arguing with you on the pulsar/scope yahoo list serve about the ethics of pirating. while i still hold that warez can be justified *sometimes*, usually such is not the case. thanks for the device. i cannot wait to play with it tonight!
Spirit - 'twould be swell to be able to comment on modular devices. why not just post in the modular forum for the time being? I started a thread entitled "FX MACHINES." haven't gotten any posts on what people think of the concept. how bout you show some initiative and check it out?
or do you just talk the talk?
i'm just messing!
lemme know what you think though.

On speaking of a ratings system for patches & devices, why not also have it where the highest rated are pushed to the top of the list, mp3.com style? The fact is that there are so many freebies around now that it's damn hard to sift through which ones are actually worth loading up.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped caring about fresh developments which is too bad cuz I know there must be some great stuff I've missed. On that note, that tremendous library of Reaktor synths that all sound the same are completely wasted on people like me, I'd much rather have the library of SynC Modular where it's small but incredibly varied.
