I have been reading tons of great material here on the site regarding sample rates and preamp gear and tube mics, etc....

I think that what I'm understanding from most of what I read is that it is more important to have great mics and preamps, and great D/A conversion than it is to have the ability to record at high sample rates. I'm about ready to spend about $7K on gear but will probably still do the next project on tripleDat at 16bits/44.1Khz.

I've had good success with it so far, even without the great mics, pre's & A/D stuff....

What do you guys think? If you had to choose between the gear and the sample rates which would be your priority?

Thanks!!!

from a review of the Presonus Firestation:
... due to the extraordinary acoustic quality of the Presonus converters (max 48k/24bit) one can safely ignore devices with inflationary high sampling rates.
As long as no mass-compatible medium for high sampling rates is established, those 'standard' converters as the Firestation's will continue to be the measure.

cheers, Tom

Oh yeah... I'm really excited about the next project... I have had some pretty high compliments from technical people I respect on the latest project just using pulsar and tripledat.... really with only 2 good mics (AKG C414 and a Rode NT1) and Fostex VC-8 A/D converters... can't wait to try it out with the upgraded front end stuff!!! (at 16/44.1)!!!
