Hi Guys.

For a while now, I've been juggling about the idea of creating a new pulsar related resource website, in order to hone my web design and scripting skills

Now that I have the time and resources, I think this can now become a reality.

The main reason being, is that recently whenever I want to find some info, I have to ask someone where it is, or do a search.
Newbies in particular have to this....

This is why I want to produce a site with guides, tips, tricks, recommended specs, downloads etc all in a standard easy to reach format. Both for beginners or experts

If anyone doesn't see the need for this kind or resource, please feel free to voice your opinion.

First and foremost it will NOT have a discussion forum, planetz is there for that.

So the question comes "Why are you telling us all this?"

Well, creative naming is not my strong point...

Thats where you guys come in. To start something like this takes a lot to get the ball rolling, I think you can help take the sting out of it for me by;

1) Coming up with IDEAS for a NAME and or WEB ADDRESS

2) Any flashy/pro/wannabe designers out there may wish to submit their concept ideas for a logo.

3) Comments on the Colour scheme/Layout will also be greatly appreciated.

The most innovative ideas, plus a few of my own (hopefully)will be used on the website.

And those giving the (winning?) ideas will of course recieve credit, and the extra kudos here on planetz

Tell me what you think....

Ideas/opinions can be posted here on planetz
Or sent by email to remix_me@yahoo.com

But please NO ATTACHMENTS without prior warning, (ie you email me, then I request the attachment.)

Okay guys thats my ramble over,

Please please please help me make this a success.

At the end of the day this is aimed at making your music making life easier!

Thank-You!

This has got to be a winner:

Pulsar And Scope Systems Information Online Network (passion)

but I wouldn't like to find it with a search engine!! (or perhaps I would)

A bit techie, but it does have a nice ring to it, and no, we would never find the site if we used that acronym....

How about "Pulsar/Scope Information Online Network"

or PSION, errrrr maybe not....

or possibly just SION?

other suggestions that spring to mind, a bit crappy but never mind.

MegaScope ?
or Pulsar I.O.N (information online network)
I.O.N Scope aka I.O.N.S (nah, maybe not)

Everybody does this when they think of a good name, go through loads of poor ones until they find a decent one, hope nobody flames me for it!

Thanks for the input though

Although I'm not at all experienced in designing for the web, I think I can help with the general design and logo of the site. It seems like a good idea to have a true resource site. I think I'll try and do some logo designs, but I need to have a name to work with first. Or I'll just make one up for the moment. I'll let you know.

Okay great, I mean the style/colour scheme is an integral part of a website really, so the name is not the be all and end all. I'd love to see any ideas

Can anyone tell me what the name planetZ has to pulsar/scope?

It doesn't have to be completely relavent, perhaps just have a nice ring to it.

What about just 'Psi'

Isn't that some physics thing ? Or a greek letter ? or both ? Anyway I think its quite neat, just standing for Pulsar scope information.

Am I a loser ?

Yeah its a physics thing; pounds per square inch
Not a greek letter either; I think you mean 'phi'?

I quite like it, almost want to add something on to the end of it to make it seem fuller.

PSI is good.
Another one:

Scope Fusion Network

http://www.scopefusion.net
(The domain seems 2B available.)

IANAL but, unless you recieve written permission from Creamware, using a trademark like "Scope Fusion" as is (or as part of) your site's name might eventually get you in trouble.

If you do want to use that as a name, don't hesitate to contact Creamware. You're better off knowing right away if they're comfortable with that.

Anyway, PlanetZ residents are creative people so, you'll probably have lots of other choices to choose from.

How about GrooveScope or maybe something simple like scopenet?

In any case, have fun!

Scope Fusion Network sounds well  Direct link to SFP and connection between Scope Fusion Platform users. Quite an ambitious name, too!

You could go for something less formal and linked to the name. How about "Periscope" or "SHARC" ?

How about:

The Pulsar/Scope Resource Center?

I know, it does not have the same hardcore "contraction", as what Niel suggested, but hey, you can't have your cake and eat it too (sorry, that one was far out).

Othervice The SFN was a realy good suggestion too.

I’ve not done any web design, but I have done quite a bit of work in the past on ergonomics and a lot of PC programming.

Colours:
As your website is going to be a resource centre and study site, you should be careful in your choice of colours.
Many people visiting the site will not do so for an hour or two study purposes. Most will be in need of a quick solution to a problem, and perhaps a bit stressed.
Regardless of the persons’ state at the time, or how long they stay for, they will be focussed and needing to concentrate. This normally adds a bit of tension, and if you’re studying hard you tend to put quite a bit of subconscious strain on your eyes in an attempt to understand what you’re reading. Therefore I would suggest pastel shades. The home page can be dynamic to attract people to venture beyond the front end, but after that make it easy on the eye, with soft colours. The opposite, such as lots of bright colours will send a negative message to the visitor and perhaps restrict their concentration. It works like this – red is seen as an aggressive colour, so the reader may feel that the subject matter is challenging them, is too tough for them and they’ll never learn it. They will be less open to absorbing information. I could spend quite a bit more time on colours, but I think you get the picture.

Attraction:
The home page should be fun, bright and attractive. It should make someone feel welcome and comfortable with the environment that they’re going into.
Key bits of information should include the last time that the site was updated – users will know that it is still maintained and that the information is current. It should include a contact email address too. I also think that a comments link is useful. Regardless of what people feel about the site – you need to know! If they’re happy with it, then you’re going to get a buzz from it. If they’re not, you’ll probably want to improve it. Let’s face it, you’re doing a great job and obviously care for people to take this project on in the first place. In terms of customer satisfaction then, use the 80/20 rule that can apply to most things. For instance you can do 80% of a job in 20% of the time. The tough 20% takes the other 80% of the time. So it should be with your comments page. If you’re pleasing 80% of visitors, then only use minimal effort to improve the other 20%.
Gets some tips from magazine covers, other websites etc – remember – your front page is advertising and marketing.

Display:
Nothing annoys people more than dead or broken links or a website that isn’t properly structured. If you’ve got flashy bits, tuck them out of the way of the links to the study areas.
I seem to remember reading that when most people pick up a book, magazine, newspaper etc or look at a computer screen, the first place that the Western eye goes to is the top right hand corner!!!!! Strange but true – make use of it.
If you’re like most Brits when they pick up a newspaper, we start at the back page for some strange reason (probably sport). You can build on this too by having a really interesting link or page near the end of your front page options. How about “joke of the week” (I’m sure that the Z crowd can supply enough)

Other Considerations:
I’m running out of lunch break so consider a couple of other things.
People will want to print, cut, paste, take screen dumps and so on. Make this accessible for them.
Whenever I cut and paste an article from these forums (forii?) and paste it into word I get yellow text! Gross! On other sites there are all sorts of hyper links to other sites, pictures and so on. Again, if you cut and paste this leads to all sorts of editing to be done in your local word processor. Perhaps have text running down the centre of the screen with some side columns for access to pictures etc.

Hope this is some use to you in getting your thoughts together. Must go - work calls
