New DAW building : ASUS A7M+XP 2000 infoz needed!!

Hi m8's
Im thinking to build a new DAW with that configuration:

MOBO ASUS A7M (ASUS Chipset,better than VIA)
AThlon XP 2000
1 GB RAM (SAMSUNG CAS 2.5)
2 x 40GB IBM ULTRA ATA133 HD
1 X 20GB ULTRA ATA133 MAXTOR HD (from my old DAW)
MATROX G450 (from my old daw)
1 Pulsar II
1 PowerSampler

Anybody have experience with ASUS A7M and Athlon XP (and pulsar of course)?
Seems that ASUS chipset are better than VIA that's the reason im buyng an "old" MOBO like the A7M.
Any tips for the memory?It's better to use particular labels (i've heard tha samsung are good)?Have any sense use memories with SPD chip?

FYI, A7M is an AMD chipset, not Asus. Asus don't do any chipset at all. Yes AMD chipset are better 'pci wise' than VIA, but still no match with Intel chipset like i815. And with personal experience, not half as stable.

I know asus don't made chipsets i've maded some errors writing this post.

Well.I don't want to buy intel.My present DAW is an early Athlon (pre-thunderbird) 750 @ 950 with an ASUS K7 with the "tremendous" VIA KX-133 chipset.But i've no PCI problems with my PULSAR + PowerSampler.And now with Win XP (after a lot of tweaks) is REALLY stable.The Pulsar/SCope OS have no crashes from months and sometimes only sonar 2.0 XL crashes (but probably is caused by some bad plug-ins).
In particular situations i have a total crash of the system (Blue Screen) with an error of scope.sys (or .drv i don't rememba the Windows error message) but it happens 1 time at month or less.
So i think the A7M it's better than an old K7 (even if it works really well for me).
Or not?
Marcuspocus,what stability problems do u have encounter?Do u have used an ASUS A7M?

Hi KWild, i'm building a new pc tommorrow with a MSI K7N420D mobo, apparently they are quite good.

MSI nForce board may be really good for games but really poor performance with CW ... you might be able to squeeze something through it with some persistance though. Not exactly the motherboard I would suggest for CW, I think even VIA KT333 is better

But one person had good results with the MSI board, even if myself and at least 3 other people didn't.

If I had that kind problem with it, do they take these things back or what? Would I be lumbered with it and have to resell it?

I got this mobo because apparently its good for not making snap,crackle & pops

Mmm, a tough one a lot of friendly retailers will let you return it providing you buy the replacement board from them.
Your rights dictate that you can return the board if it is faulty, if the advertising is misleading in any way; ie if it doesn't do what it says on the box.
Did the shop assistant say it would do the job you wanted it too. If thats the case then you are usually entitled to a refund if a shop assistant has mislead or provided incorrect information.

My advise would be to call the retailer posing as a new customer and inquire about their policy on returns. Then depending on their answer you can decide what to do, I know this seems cloak and dagger but if they tell new customers that they have a no quibble return policy to get a sale. Then you can take advantage of this when you go in to return your board.

If they have a 'faulty only' returns policy then that is left to your conscience..... I won't go there.

If not it goes on ebay.

why,when the cw card is the piece with the magic,do they always want to build their daw around the "almighty" cpu? doesn't it make more sense to chose parts to have the most effective SYSTEM?(especially when it really doen't cost any more money to build something that works as opposed to something that's a pain in the butt)

I was a die hard AMD fan, and still would be if there was a decent chipset to support amd.
VIA, SIS just do not cut it.
