I purchased my PulsarII one year ago or something in tough competition with the digi001 package from digidesign. My pulsar setup has been ok, but now im considering selling my pulsar and getting one of these digi001 factory deals, with loads of plugins added ( I calculated the cost of these to about 3000$). There are two reasons for considering switching
1) I´m starting as an assistent at a music and Cinema THX-mixing studio, offcourse they use protools- would be nice to learn some at home too.
2) I want a more simple setup. Instead of pulsar + logic or cubase I could get an all protools system (though scaled down), and really start recording something instead of just tweaking.
I know ´all´the pro and cons of the digi001 vs. pulsar - latency, expansion posibilities and so forth. But have anyone seen the digi-setup in function. Any good or bad experiences, anyone done the switch from digi to pulsar or the reverse?
I´m really glad ´for my pulsar-card, but maybe I´ll make more music with a simplistic mini-protools-setup?! Any comments would be nice.
Switching from PulsarII to Digi001?
A friend of mine works on this protools platform and for what it does, it seems to be doing well... I think that the integrated sequencer makes a big difference in the setup, especially in the stability issue...
Of course, you forget about our cherished plug-ins and synths, samplers and the whole apparatus, but, if it fits your needs...
Once I have a fortune to spend, a protools setup might well be a part of my studio, side to side with other platforms...

1.they should use cw.cw won an academy award for sound with gladiator.
2.i spend time recording not tweaking.my system is very stable and effective.
good luck, i'm sure what you're moving to will allow you to do good work if you are able, you're system will just be less flexible and more limited.
imho
(really tho-whatever works for you is good!)

If i only recorded bands and stuff, live performers with microphones i would definitley go for the Digi 001.
Why? Because i think the Protools software is SOOO superior to Logic and Cubase.
For recording that is.
I was considering that system but when i dicovered what a Pulsar+Logic can do it was a no-brainer for me.
'Cause i am a synth man and i don't record live stuff anymore.

My brother users Digi001 with his Mac and he seems to like it.
He went straight from hardware recording on digital multitrackers so it suited him well.
They have some great plug-ins like SampleTank and Native Instrument's B4 and Battery available as well as Soft Sample Cell. I don't know if the Access Virus plug-in is RTAS though - I doubt it somehow.
It seems to be a pretty good platform although it uses native CPU rather than specialised DSP?? I hope that's right.
All the plug-ins seem pretty expensive and there doesn't seem too many synths on offer, but it's a pretty good choice for a project studio. I think the development leans a little to the MAC side.
If you decide to go that way I hope it works out for you.

Thank for all the replys! Many good informations.
Kim I would like to hear some more about the digi+pulsar combo The next bit is in danish:(det var måske nu jeg skulle skrive på dansk?
and translated into english for non-dansih persons: Somebody told me that i Couldn´t use pulsar and digi001 at the same time, I don´t know if that is true. Offcourse i would be interested in using eg. pulsar and digi 001, or even better pulsar + some protools software (protols free, but maybe you can purchase protools LE without the digi breakout box, that would be great?)
On a longer term I´m also seriously considering the pulsar, logic 5, logic controller, phat control-combo etc. Would probably be the best bang-for-das-buck! Maybe I should just use protools free, and learn the protools thing there, and keep my Pulsar!
By the way Kim, are you from København?
Nice weekend to Yo all (sorry for the hiphop language - I´m not a hiphopguy anyway, Just saw the MTV videomusicAwards yesterday - quite funny)Anyway check out http://www.looplabs.com (loopmixer) if you want some nice time away from your Pulsar.

Last year I saw one of the biggest protools system in the world (I know it costed something like $ 300.000!): DAE freezes as CW cards do!
Maybe Digi001 is easier to setup, but it costs a lot for what it does
About sequencing I know most pro having protools hardware use Logic or Performer(someone Cubase)...
imho the only thing very good is the 3rd party plugins availability
Good Luck

That's not true. The idea is to use ProtoolsLE and Digi001 hardware as your recording/sequencing enviroment, and use Pulsar as a "standalone" DSP mixer-fx-sampler-synth package, connected via Adat, S/P-dif and OMS.Somebody told me that i Couldn´t use pulsar and digi001 at the same time, I don´t know if that is true.
You can't use ProtoolsLE without Digi hardware, and Protools Free "sucks".Offcourse i would be interested in using eg. pulsar and digi 001, or even better pulsar + some protools software (protols free, but maybe you can purchase protools LE without the digi breakout box, that would be great?)

I'm using Logic 5.1 & Control / ScopeCard (soon 2 of them) / Korg Oasys PCI. For the money it's the most powerfull and best sounding system on the planet.
(I also have a Protools Mix...)

Yes, I'm from Wonderfull CopenhagenBy the way Kim, are you from København?
