Revival or for the first time really….

Post by cemhot »

Hello lovely community,

i used to be the most humble user with only one Luna card.

Always on very low money.

About 25 years ago i bought a Luna 2.
Ten years ago i bought two Pulsar 1 Cards.
Seven years ago i bought a HP Workstation.
Two years ago i bought Sonic Core Version 7 and the Pro Wave.

For those, who are not keen to read my emotional story but still like to help me:
Please jump to the section after the double line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's only now that i put in the two Pulsar Cards and installed Scope 7.

Twelve years ago i started a selfemployment in the organic food sector.
The first six of this years, working very hard with nearly no income, but without alternatives.
Six years ago, in Sept. 2018 i opened my own shop, which went straight down after the first Corona lockdown.

Now i'm sitting here with my 56 years of age, with so little perspectives and exhausted from hard work.

The only thing which could enlighten my days could be music.
As Frank Zappa said: "music is the best"

As my DAW was also misused for office work and had some kind of failure i couldnt track down, i came up
with the idea of buying a hardware sequencer, that i could do a little practising and composing with.
I managed to get a Kawai Q80 EX, which reads standard midi files from floppy.
Before that i had a Q 80 non EX-Version. But with that i coudnt work on my old ideas again.

But then i catched fire again.
I took an old musical idea, only chords, which nobody really understood.
By the way there is the wonderful Faza of Orbitone on the piano.
I installed Audacity on my office computer, and for demo reasons, I put on some vocals of Donny Hathaway on top of my chord changes.
Very rough, acapellas from a YouTube file.
It is "i love you more than you'll ever know"
It is a cover of Blood, Sweat & Tears though.
I'm a Soul man, but no abilities to sing or invent melodies for singing.
But i had this inspiration, that the singing had to be bluesy and this song of Donny Hathaway came to my mind.

Everything was magic.
Donnys version was half of the tempo of my song.
The result was stunning (of course Donny ist stunning).
For those, who like to listen:

https://we.tl/t-6lOBk6pDpu

I just transposed some parts and moved them here and there.
But the main thing was, that i saw, i could still do something.

So i decided i had to work on my old music again.

And the last four or six weeks i started to setup everything slowly again.

This included a Miditemp MP88 Midi interface and a little cheap gear like a Behringer BCR2000 a Boss Drum Maschine, a Roland Sound Canvas and so on.

Now comes the beautiful part.
I manage to setup nearly everything. Most things work out!
Although it was really a lot:
New Midi patchbay
First time using an audio patchbay
Connecting the Behringer BCR2000 to my other Hardware and so on.

It makes me very happy!

I decided to go back to my old computer with windows xp again, as the new HP Workstation wouldnt eat my old harddisk.

So i finally put the Pulsars in and installed my Sonic Core update.

It took about 30 years to play a Prophet and a Minimoog!
I am really grateful, that i can still use my Scope stuff (hardware and software).
That it still works on Win xp, and that this community is still here!
It could have been worse…

This post is for the background and the most important question at the moment, about the routings and the mixer.

I am surprised that i could manage so many things by myself.
But i have a low ability about everything related to routings and the likes.
I also really have complexes about that.

I will ask some things i am not able to solve myself.
I will put the questions in the appropiate forums.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Routing and mixer questions:

The last weaks i did a lot of try and error with the routings in Scope.
Also with a lot of success.
My aim was to be able to record my shitty Fender Rhodes with effects from Scope.
The next step was, that i wanted to choose to record with and without effects, while listening to the effects.
This took me nearly a week.
But i managed to do with the help of 4x Output Switching from mausmuso:

viewtopic.php?p=356871&hilit=4x+Output+ ... ng#p356871

So a ton of thanks for that!

I also used an old plugin "Switch it".
I dont know who created that one, but a thousend thanks to that person as well!

I dont know if this is very sophisticated or dumb how i did it, but it works.

The screenshot shows, what I have done.

Image

This is how it's done:

to get a wet recording (Scope effects):
in Cubase
in the track:
Luna in wet (=Asio 1 and 2)

output doesnt matter, but to listen to it later:
put the output on Rhodes dry.

additionally one track dry:
Luna in dry (=Asio 3 and 4)

in Scope:
Switch it on 1.
4xoutput switching:
push the first pair on

to have a dry and a wet recording:
push 1. and 2nd pair on

Scope synth bounce:
Switch it on 1
Input in Cubase:
6 Scope Bounce (=Asio 11 and 12)

Outputs that work:
Rhodes dry (=Asio 1 and 2)
Stereo out 3 (=Asio 5 and 6)

to listen to a dry recorded track with Scope effects:
select the dry track in Cubase, select output wet und put Switch it on 2.

Mute Channels 3 and 4 in STM mixer, otherwise you listen double.

To bounce this track with the Scope effect:
Create a new track, put the tracks input on Luna wet, the output on Rhodes dry or Stereo out 3, and Switch it on 2

------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe there is a simpler way with a mixer?

But I understand too less of mixers.
Direct out, busses?

I mean, it works, but now there comes some desire like using a compressor in the chain and so on.
And this screams "mixer, please!"
There are insert possibilites in the Scope mixers.

As i understand that using mono is better most of the times,
i would sometimes like to record my Rhodes in stereo, because the Boss CE-1 only works when using both channels.
But then, would I insert two mono Vincos in two channels? Really?

Maybe it would also be possible with something like the Mixab Mixers?

viewtopic.php?p=353849&hilit=mix12ab#p353849

or

a Scope patchbay, or this mixer?

viewtopic.php?t=36036&hilit=parallel+co ... 6000d9620c

The problem is that this excceds my abilities.

Someone here
viewtopic.php?t=3937&hilit=%27record+synth%27+in+cubase

said:
"one way is to have ASIO on an AUX send of Pulsar mixer, then adjust the AUX levels for the channels inside pulsar you'd like to record, select a recording region, arm an audio channel, press record."

I saw that the STM 2448 has aux, but i was not able to do that. I really dont understand how this is done.
Sadly most of the posts with screenshots are also gone.

As i updated from Version 4 to Version 7 without installing Version 5, I dont have the manual from Version 5.
I searched the internet and this board up and down without success.
Can someone maybe upload it somewhere?

I have the Manuals of Scope 4 version though.

I would be very grateful, if you could help me to make my days a little brighter!

With love to the Scope world from my humble place in Germany.

If your setup with switches works for you, it's ok. There is no right or wrong, you must be able to understand and handle the setup.
In the 2448 mixer, you can add inserts by clicking right on the white insert-label. To listen wet/dry you could either disable the insert by the green button in 2448 or within the insert. At mixers, there is controlroom, which is an other switching device.
AUX is often used to feed signals to an external effect box.
For mono/stereo i understand, that there are usecases for experts to use mono in some cases. I personally use stereo only. If it's a mono input, it just goes to both inputs. (But I don't consider myself to be the god of mixing, so feel free to ignore :) )

Thank you both very much!
Crazy!
I was on that download site several times!
Seems i looked in the wrong directories.

@nebelfuerst:
i see i wasnt very clear on one thing.
I didnt write "simultaneously".

I wanted to record a dry and a wet signal simultaneously to two different tracks in Cubase.
So the ControlRoom doesnt do what 4xOutputSwitch does.
But thank you anyway for the hint.
Maybe it can replace the "Switch it" device.
It is more flexible i see.

So the question is:
Can i use a mixer to give a line in signal to two different outputs, one wet, one dry?
That's why i was talking about busses and direct out.

According to this picture (taken from 2448 manual) you could use monitor to get the direct input to an output.
Aux seems to be affected by inserts, already.
The problem might be, that monitoring works only for a single channel. (two channels would be mixed into one)

hmm...
i saw that flow chart last night..
i was like: do i really have to....
i was liek "alright, yeah, this is how it works. i trust them!!

There is an afw...beautiful amount of button, switches, faders.....
i cant even find the monitor section.
Maybe if someone confirms that it will work, i will delve into it.
Maybe meanwhile i'lls tay with my solution.
Thanks anyway!

Just click channels, then monitor.
Signal comes out on MonL and MonR at the bottom.

I‘m in the same boat... ;)
„Big Mixers“ confuse me and I (almost) never use aux-busses, but rather prefer a setup like what Valis recently mentioned.
viewtopic.php?p=369712#p369712
My favorite is Dynamixer, but Micro Mixers may get involved when some kind of „bus structure“ is required.
I‘m usually on a rather low channel count, but frequently use dedicated fx (reverbs/delays/filters) on a per channel basis.
The display in the routing window is a big advantage in that situation.

Multi-FX can host plugins like inserts & sends, but there's no wrong way to mix. For the effects that need to be hosted in a slot to work, GaryB reminded me recently Multi-FX works too.

cool, thank you both very much!
A lot of food!
I think i need a workshop about mixer in the Volkshochschule :-)

I think at the moment i'll stay with my setup as it works, except the thing with the mono/stereo compressor thing.

Just tried out the Multi FX in stereo.
Nice!
This way i dont have to get my head aroud the busses stuff!

I'll keep the other links for further education.
Thanks, folks.

Now i'm playing around with Minimax and my Behringer BCR2000.

I'll post something in another tread.
