Hi all,
Windows 10 asked me to upgrade to win 11 v 24H2 and wanted your advice. Is it safe? should I wait ?
I wondered if there are anything uncompatible for DAWs, or if there will be a need to reinstall softwares (I believe it is the same, but thought I would ask here first).
For the moment I am happy with win10 except that some software won't work with Scope asio (such as immediate crash/blue screens, like DaVinci Resolve Free version that I wanted to use, which is annoying, but I guess win11 does not change anything? ).
Thanks
Upgrade to win 11 ?
Re: Upgrade to win 11 ?
no big advantage, no huge disadvantage.
if the computer is used for a lot of web browsing i would update for the security updates, otherwise, i wouldn't bother. if there is software that does not work in win10, then i'd update as well.

Thanks Gary.
The only reason I would find win11 useful is for the new notepad with multiple page auto-restore
(not that it does not exist elsewhere but, well, that's nice). I think it's got MIDI 2.0 too (eventhough I don't need it).

I will upgrade my PCI Scope box to win11 by end of life. It is networked but not used to browse for anything but driver updates and this forum for device downloads

Re: Upgrade to win 11 ?
I must have clicked on the wrong button but my box upgraded to 11 ‘by itself’
It works as before and upon login I can chose between both versions, but only 11 works

Re: Upgrade to win 11 ?
I strongly recommend Notepad++. No need to update if that's your primary reason.

Security updates for Windows 10 and this year. That’s the only reason.

"Your PC will continue to work, but support for Windows 10 is discontinued. After 14 October 2025, your Windows 10 PC will no longer receive security updates and Microsoft will no longer be available to provide Windows 10 technical support."
Didn't they mentioned , that there will be an payed option to extend the updates ?
I have once tried with fresh Win11 install on my main audio computer (non-supported hardware) and it was just horrible.
Peaks, jumps, clicks .... (done the same optimizations like for Win10), formatted right away and installed Win10 back.
Otherwise, I have this second computer with Win11 installed 24H2 (non-supported hardware) 2x LunaII and works fine, but it's not for music production.

Re: Upgrade to win 11 ?
On one of my PCs, I accidentally clicked upgrade to 11 and I just tried it with scope pci. Scope works, but some older audio software didn't work well. For AI applications (using Nvidia drivers), W11 is slower unless you disable a whole bunch of security mechanisms.
"Security updates" often tend to be "telemetry updates" or restriction of essential functions.
So always run a backup before updating to W11. It helped me to get back to W10.
