To do a pre-amp digitally, you have to understand the analog properties of the signal. The signal is too low to do GOOD amp digitally. It's a little different, but it comes to about the same as if you'd compare it to recording 5bit and then converting it to 16bit for recording. All typical properties of the too low analog signal will get lost.
An analog pre-amp however gives more realistic sound. Although not really special preamp, but it's got a decent pre-amp on my analog mixer. I still use it for lots of things actually. It servers as monitor mix or just main mixer when no PulsarOS is taking control. That's stand-by mixer
