Sorry, bit new to the Pulsar Game, but I have two quick questions that your collective experience may be able to solve.

1) Random loud popping when I record and playback even just 1 track of Audio from Midi in Cubase 5.0

2) Complete loss of timing between Midi and audio tracks. Midi track to Midi track timing is fine, audio track to audio track timing fine (except for loud random popping of course)

I suspect/hope there are just some buttons I have forgotton to press!

Subject: defect products

I now have the same problem with 5.0r1.I had cubase for long time but in fact it never worked properly ,but this problem is new.I now only use cubase as a sequenzer.I checked if my audiofiles were corrupted, but no .The problem is either cubase or scope asio-drivers.Do logic users have the same problem while running asio drivers?
The softwarebusines is deeply depraved because they keep selling defect products to us for very big money. Many of us are professional dependent on these products.
The problems with cubase and pulsar in combination have been known for so long time now so I simply don´t figure out why the "bucks" or defect softwareproducts are not repaired long time ago.

Subject: Next best option?

What then would be the next best option Cubase-wise. Is there any version that seems to work OK in your experience? I would stick to using it only as a sequencer but I'd like to have the option to use the VST effects as well.

Thanks

Subject: Sounds familiar

I had the same problem with Cubase 3.7 and my Pulsar II. To correct it I dropped the ULLI to 7ms for 44.1 kHz (middle setting, I think), and I adjusted my virtual memory to 1.25 times my system RAM.

This setting will vary with different PC's, but you can experiment with settings 1.25 to 2 times your system RAM.

The trick is to find the sweet spot. Seems to me the ASIO drivers can't keep up. You can also try lower latency settings.

Also, check you vcache figure in the system.ini file. Follow the manual to make sure you max and min numbers are OK.

Disable write-behind caching. If you're playing back multiple channels of audio, this can hose your system. Disable USB and unused serial ports. Check your BIOS settings and compare them to the manual.

Finally, I think a lot of the VST effects are weak. I do like the TC Native and Waves plugins, but the stock Cubase effects are sorry. I've heard that Logic's stock effects are somewhat richer.

P.S. You shouldn't put all your efforts into the latest sequencer out there. Chances are you will run into new bugs that no one has dealt with, and Steinberg may or may not have had the time to address them. I'm stuck on Cubase 3.7, because I know what problems to look for. I've got 5.1, but will probably not use it for some time. It's enough to debug the Pulsar problems, much less than having to do it also for my sequencer, too many variables.

Subject: bad asio drivers

Thanks for you suggestions to solve my problems with cubase 5.0r1.I´ve done it all,but I still have popping and distorted sound. It´s a little less when I play from my scsi disk but still there.I think I know all the trics to optimize the DAW so the only possibility left is bad asio drivers.

Subject: No problem...

You're welcome... too bad it didn't help. What blew my mind on my setup was that I had all those performance tweaks in place, but I could not get rid of the clicks & pops until I changed the virtual memory, the vcache, and the latency settings.

My virtual memory was 2X my system Ram, but I brought it down to 1.25X, and that seemed to help. Now I can't get a latency beyond 7ms for 44.1 kHz, but that's plenty for me.

From reading this forum and the one on egroups, it seems that only some people have this problem at one point in time. It's possible that it's more PC related than ASIO.

Maybe if you have some time (who does, think we're all trying to make music here) you can play around with different virtual memory, vcache and latency settings?

Good Luck,
