Hi !

I'd like to clarify this in my mind.
I have one pci-e card (gen 1) with 2 x sata III connectors.
My (this) computer uses older sata II connections and i have ssd installed which is sata III.
So, i have tried to install that card into pci-e 16x slot and checked performance in windows 10. (samsung magician).
It's worst than normal sata II connection.

My question is, is this because pci-e card is gen 1 and should be gen 2 ?
Does this depends, which "gen" is from card or motherboard ?

At my main music workstation i have sata III connectors and the same samsung ssd and performace is excellent.

Will i benefit if i try gen 2 sata III card and install it into pci-e gen 2 x16 slot ?

Yes, your card is PCIe 1.0 x1, so it can give you "up to" 250MB/s for all ports on the card. Each SATA III port gives you 600MB/s, so you'll never get there with that card.

You're on-board SATA II goes "up to" 300MB/s per port, so you are better off using them than your PCIe card.

SATA III still has more bandwidth than PCIe 2.0 x1. But you are using an x16 slot, so look for a new PCIe 2.0 x2 or x4 card to get everything out of your SSD.

Also Samsung Magician is a non real world benchmark.
It's meant to make you think your drive is a great buy.
If it's a Samsung it is.
I have all models of their M.2s and a pair of 850s.

But Samsung found a start up company where the software cached drives that resulted in better benchmarks, better sales.
Samsung calls their acquisition Magician.

Crystal and AS SSD are accurate.
They tell you the straight scoop.

Plus all SSDs are plenty fast with great transaction times.
Native apps only need 33% of the SATA III throughput.

I have tested my ssd's with crystal software.

I have 3 ssd's.

One Samsung 840 evo 128gb is located in this computer, sata II and
other two Samsung 840 evo 128gb and Crucial MX100 256gb in my main music computer , sata III.

I have attached both 3 test results.
