Aftertouch, ideas?

Post by faxinadu »

soooooooooo! :)
as an electronic producer i have never really gone into the whole concept of aftertouch.
obviously. trying stuff out is fun and i can come up with some cool ideas, for example hooking it to lfo speed.
so this goes to the more organic musicians here, how do you utalize aftertouch in your music/playing?

I use it for vibrato, it seems a lot more natural than using the mod wheel for me. I think you can do that with most synths. But you can modulate just about anything on most synths.

Yes. It just spares a third hand :-)
Otherwise you're free to assign whatever you like.
But not al 'movements' are do-able with aftertouch, like a slow steady filterchange.
I think you'll profit most when life playing, in a studio setting or a real life performance.

if you use sharcs mvc it has poly aftertouch and if you have a ensoniq or gems2/3 or any other keyboard that sends it

you can get very expressive sounds after touch is great for lfo pitch modulation saves having to use the wheel for the effect or for brass sounds that when you use pressure you open the filter cutoff

its great for live but if your a daw sequencer type of person and not a keys player then its just easy to write the modulation data in

The QuNexus works well with PAT.
I like how a chord can be played, then you can have a single note trigger an LFO controlled Filter Sweep so the voicing's hold the harmony, while the depressed PAT note has a melody with motion.

As far as AFT goes you can kick on various modulations pretty much the same way, but they are applied globally.

PAT is also a great way to bend a single note while other notes are unaffected.
Think of a Showbud Pedal Steel where a depressed Pedal bends a string up or down while other strings are not affected.

AFT is good for this too but only for gliding down or up an entire chord/notes being depressed.
