Win7 64bit problem scope 5.1 on hp xw4600

Post by fricklerderii »

Hello,
I just bought a hp xw4600 with win 7 64bit to replace my old tusl2 system with scopecard and pulsarII card.
I installed scope 5.1 64bit without any Problems but if I load a second Masterverb in scope, the computer freezes, even the mouse wont move anymore. I have to press the powerbutton for a while to shut down the pc and then start again...

Then i tried to put some B2003 devices into the Project. That worked fine. And what a wonder: i could aktivate up to 9 Masterverbs after that in the Projekt.
I thougt, everything would worke fine now. But when i startet scope next time, the Problem was there again. Everything freezes when i open the second Masterverb.
Does anybody know this problem and how to fix it? Do I have to switch back to my tusl2 ???

Yes, i already did.

My irq-sharing is as following - is there a hidden problem left?

IRQ 20 Sonic Core Scope
IRQ 20 Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 5 - 2948

Speicheradresse 0xF3000000-0xF33FFFFF Sonic Core Scope
Speicheradresse 0xF3000000-0xF33FFFFF Intel(R) 82801 PCI-Brücke - 244E

IRQ 21 Sonic Core Pulsar2
IRQ 21 High Definition Audio-Controller
IRQ 21 Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 294A

well, the first question is what is in PCIe port 5 and 6?
have you tried disabling the built-in audio in the device manager?

i'm definitely a proponent of the xw workstations, but i always use the 4400s...

Now I disabled the Ports 5 and 6 and also the built in audiodevice. First it worked but than the same thing

Is there any other thing i could try?

Try to swap the Scope and Pulsar cards, it did solve a similar problem on my HP XW4600.

Also, have you flashed the BIOS to the latest version?

Additional BIOS settings:
● Set PCI latency timer to 64 (cycles).
● Disable PCI SERR# Generation
● Turn off quick boot to run a full memory check at boot time (POST) once in a while to make sure the installed memory is fine. Surprisingly, I got a 207 ERR message after applying the full mem check, while the system seemed to work correctly.

FYI
I used Happycritters bios settings on my WX8600. I am running W7 and Xite with no issues

You may have a different Intel board/BIOS version than the one in my computer so there may be some discrepancies between what I've shown or have named in relation to your set-up. I don't recall exactly why certain values were chosen and why, however, I was confident at the time this was done because it was researched fairly well.

The E/D shorthand may be enable/disable or extended/default, either way, in my system anyways, there was only one 'D' or 'E' option for the first letter of the selection. Here's the BIOS settings of my xw8400 that has provided a stable environment for my Pulsar I card (PCI 4dsp):

xw8400 Bios Settings - Pulsar I (4DSP PCI Card - fully functioning):

BIOS:

F‎ILE > SYSTEM BIOS - v02.38

SECURITY > DEVICE SECURITY:
System Audio > Hidden
Embedded Security Device > Hidden
NETWORK SERVICE BOOT: Disabled

OS SECURITY:
Data Execution Prevention > Enable
Intel Virtualization Technology > Disable
OS Mgt. of Embedded Security Device > Enable
Reset of Embedded Sec. Dev. Thru OS > Disable

POWER > OS POWER MANAGEMENT:

Runtime Power Management > Disable
Idle Power Savings > Extended
ACPI S3 Support > E
ACPI S3 Hard Disk Reset > D
ACPI S3 PS2 Mouse Wakeup > E
USB Wake on Device Insertion > D

HARDWARE POWER MANAGEMENT:

SATA Power Management > E

ADVANCED > PROCESSORS: Limit CPUID Maximum Value to 3 > D (if you have a quad core (4 > 3) Disable)

DEVICE OPTIONS: Peer-to-Peer Reads > D
Fast Delayed Transaction Timer > D

SLOT 1 PCI: Option ROM Download - PCI> E
Latency Timer > Default

SLOT 5 PCI-X 133: Slot 5 Speed > Auto
Option ROM Download > D
Latency Timer > Default

Thank you all for the answers!
Now I tried all the things, vascomusic adviced. My Setting was Scope in PCI 5, PulsarII in PCI 6. Swapping the cards did not have any effect but than i changed Scope to PCI 6 and Pulsar to PCI 7. After first tests everything workes fine. Now I hope, that this will be stabel in future!!! :D :D :D

Vascomusic, in wich PCI-slots do you use your cards? Is this maby a general problem with hp xw4600s?

it shouldn't matter much of everything is working. one or another may mean that you have to disable more or less in the device manager because of irq sharng, but all of them should work fine provided the hardware itself worked. space considerations might exist because of other cards or things on the motherboard itself being covered or in the way, but HP is generally pretty good with choosing a motherboard that works for most anything(in the business machines).

maybe the contacts on the cards are a little worn or dirty. use 99%(not less!) alcohol or a good commercial contact cleaner. maybe taking the cards in and out helped. even one light fingerprint is enough to make things misbehave.

Hello Fricklerderii,

You have a PCI slot 7 ??
Then you have a XW4600, not a XW6400 :P

Here's my XW4600 PCI hardware setup:
● Slot #5: Pulsar II
● Slot #6: Pulsar II
● Slot #7: Scope (14 DSP)
I don't think its really a problem with XW4600's.
Like on many other motherboards, every PCI slot has IRQ's shared hardwired with other devices. In case of XW4600 it is luckily the USB controllers.
Because I only use the 2 USB ports at the front, I disabled all other (rear)USB ports, to free up IRQ's as much as possible.

Here's my BIOS > PCI Device configuration:
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel USB controller : IRQ 10 (front USB1)
● Intel USB controller : IRQ 10 (front USB2)
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel USB controller : Disable
● Intel AHCI controller : IRQ 5
● VGA controller : IRQ 11
● HD Audio device : Disable
● Other multimedia device : IRQ 10 (DSP board)
● Other multimedia device : IRQ 10 (DSP board)
● Other multimedia device : IRQ 10 (DSP board)
● Broadcom Ethernet controller : IRQ 5

I wonder how many MasterVerbs you're able to load now :)

Oh man! That was a very short time to feel lucky! I Just tried to work with scope this morning and again it freezes! I can reproduce it shurly by loading the second masterverb. I tried your settings vascomusic, but that did not really help. win 7 anyway makes what it wants and assignes irqs in its own way. Even bios-disabled devices are active, if i don't deactivate them in Windows...
Now i'll try garys advice to clean the contacts with some contactspray (Kontakt 60) and see what happens. I'm affraid that it will have no effect, cause i've put the cards in an out quite a lot now... But on the otherside contactproblems can cause strange effects. Hope it will work!

i wouldn't assing irqs in the bios, but whatever works.
windows7 works best when it controls those things.

irqs are not a big deal. you will only need to disable a usb controller or two and maybe built-in audio. this can be done in the device manager. to find what irqs are shared go to programs\accessories\system tools\system information\hardware resources\conflicts/sharing and then tell what is sharing with the cards.

I cleaned the contacts and after that it worked at first.
But it can not be the reason for systemcrash because it happened again. Those times it workes i can put up to ten masterverbs in the project before pci overflow. But when i opened scope an other time system crashed again with second Masterverb...

Irq-sharing is as following:

IRQ 21 Intel(R) ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 294A
IRQ 21 Sonic Core Scope

IRQ 22 Sonic Core Pulsar2

The root port 6 seems to be responsible for onbord Networkadapter and it obviously does not matter if i deactivate it or not.

Is it possibel that maybe one of the scope/pulsarbords patitially died? I think i'll put them back in the old tusl2 board to find that out.

it's more likely that there's a problem with the pc. when Scope starts, it does a diagnostics check on the card.

Did you run the memory test in HP BIOS > Advanced?
Make sure your memory is functioning 100%
I suggest you also run memtest86+ from www.memtest.org

I did the test with memtest and with memorytest in bios. Both showed no errors. anyway, there was no crash this evening. Maybe the computer has to get familiar with scopecards
