Decent USB hub.

Post by Neutron »

Can someone recommend a decent USB2 hub that is powered and provides lots of USB power, does not make any faint high pitched whistling noise, try and go in power saving mode or otherwise crap out? i have bought 3 different ones and they have all been disappointing one way or another.

Otherwise ill have to upgrade my DAW to a new motherboard with lots of USB ports, which probably means new RAM, CPU and blah blah and i want to avoid that.

Hi Neutron,

I use this one: http://www.dabs.com/products/d-link-usb ... -24L6.html

I have a bunch of midi-usb devices attached to it and it hasn't caused me any pain yet. In fact it was only when I started getting "out of power" errors in Windows that I realised I'd left it unplugged from the mains!

Thanks,
Will

noise is usually a ground loop. you may need isolation transformers in some audio situations(like to the powered monitors)...

no the noise actually came out of the hub, it is like that "coil whine" some power supplies and video cards make under load. (and a korg nanopad did it as well)

the D-Link one is working very well, It is almost full with keyboard, mouse, dongle, CC121, and all the other "slow" stuff.

The noise probably came from the transformer, the fast switching supplies they use to convert to DC generate the equivalent of VRM noise in my experience---when they're CHEAP.

I've found this one to be useful for high-power draw USB devices (that don't have their own PSU): http://www.drbott.net/product/3122-T7UW/

A few more options:
Targus Desktop USB 2.0 7-Port Hub (ample power but unnecessary audio features for people here I'd think)
D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub (linked in this thread already)
Ultra ULT40476 Aluminus USB 2.0 Hub - 4port

Also given the preponderance of usb-connected controllers these days, it's worth noting that not all USB 2.0 hubs properly support USB 1.1 simultaniously. Ie, if you're using something that requires USB 2.0 bandwidth dedicated for audio or etc, a 1.1 device might cause some issues. What's necessary to resolve that is a "Multi-TT" USB hub:
