Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
if it's the original (non-ultra) A16, then IBM Thinkpad PSUs (16V, 4,5A) are the ideal replacement.
The original IBM part, not any replacement devices. (tons on ebay for 20 bucks or so)
My part number is 92P1022, this may change for other Thinkpad models, but they all seem identical as long as the power specs match.
The crucial point is that the A16's internal power regulators get 'very little to do' and the unit developes almost no heat anymore, becoming just handwarm without(!) fan.
Don't try this with any cheapo universal notebook PSU, not even if you can select the proper voltage.
For whatever reason the unit will overheat and not sync anymore.
The Thinkpad PSU will auto-switch itself off, when the A16 is powered down, no need to disconnect it.
cheers, Tom

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
Is there a suggestion for a USA power supply
looks like the IBM one you mention is for the UK

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
the PSU is auto switching from 100-240V, 50/60 Hz, Output 16V, 4.5A DC
it was used with many different Thinkpad models in the Pentium 3 mobile era.
(obviously under different P/Ns, as the units are identical)
cheers, Tom
ps: here are some models which use this PSU

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
Will these power supplies work with the a16 ultra?
Just glanced down and noticed that it does say ultra
mins after I bought one for 14$ from ebay...

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
definitely NOT - don't even try it
the A16 ultra needs a 12V 1.5 Ampere AC PSU, in other words: just a transformer
(12V AC devices are easy to find)
That's why I wrote ... if it's the original, non-ultra A16... above.
Since requests for the older box are more frequent, I assumed you were talking about that model
sorry if it was confusing...
this old A16 (16bit version btw) has a nice 'tone' (imho), but severe problems with supply power.
The external PSU for that device is a big transformer plus a rectifier.
Power regulation is done on a board below the converter circuit board inside the unit.
This regulation generates a lot of heat (...at a bad place) and requires a fan for heat dissipation.
The Thinkpad PSUs are a perfect match for the old A16 (non-ultra), as the regulation inside the unit has only minimal workload (doesn't heat up anymore).
I have no idea why it works with the original IBM PSUs, but not with a regular, adjustable (noname) switching PSU.
Those will almost kill the box, the A16 will get frighteningly hot and won't sync anymore.
Someone whose original PSU had died told me about it and I've verified it myself.
Replacement PSUs for the old non-ultra A16 are extremely difficult to find and expensive.
The IBM parts aren't just a welcome alternative, but even a significant improvement... imho
There even seems to be some gain in SNR, but that might also be a side-effect of the lower temperature.
cheers, Tom

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions

my bad-i thought the A16 used a 24volt ac.

i think that one on ebay is 12DC. there shouldn't be any mention of DC in the specs. the power supply must be 12vlt AC, 1.5 or more amps.
Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
the A16-Ultra PSU is just a transformer with the proper plug.
It shouldn't be much bigger than (say) 2 Ampere because the supplied voltage drops under load.
The original one probably runs at 16-18V without load, a 4 Ampere version may supply 24V unloaded.
While this doesn't directly harm the unit, it will drive the regulation much harder, generating a lot of unnecessary heat.
cheers, Tom

Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
yes, that's right.
Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
I bought a second hand A16U a while back and the seller forgot to include the PSU. So I just ordered one from Sonic Core. Try emailing them and see if they can help.
Re: a16 power supply dead any replacement suggestions
sure they can!
