For the money, imho, Tascam US 2400 controller & Scope mixer is by FAR the best solution. Basically, pick whatever control surface you like best. 100mm motorized faders or not, rotary knobs or not, transport controls or not, that is pretty much up to you, based on preference and budget. The Aux sends, FX, & EQ and the flexibility of the Scope mixers really can't be beat.

But you still need to buy mic preamps... they arent included in scope, but are included in a mixer. :)
But you can buy a mixer and use the pres only, and the use the scope mixer for real mixing.

Yeah...Mic Pres are a must...but there are many 8 channel ADAT IO based mic pres that will do the trick...

I love my Yamaha 01V96V2 mixer - handles automation well, and has good onboard pres, and LIKES Scope.

What is your budget?
What are your needs? (professional music production? mainstream / indie / underground? Style of music you work on?... I wouldn't use the same stuff for classical, for pop or for rock)
What material do you have already (monitors, console, microphones, room)

You can spend 100K in class A preamps, but if you have cheapo mics, bad monitors or a lousy room it will be like throwing money out of the window :)

+1 on the 01v96 :)

I use a pair of 01v's with ADAT option and they work great with Scope - automation, i/o's, compression, eq's & fx are all suitable for most of my needs. Combined with the Scope mixers I've never needed to look further. It's a great option if you're on a tight budget. If not, then those desks are still handy to have around.

sweet 8)

The focusrite octopre (8 preamps in 1u with two Hi-Z inputs for instruments) is a great match for the A16 ultra (need two octopres to get 16 inputs). If you need 32 inputs you can double that configuration.
With that you can use your UAD 2 610 for vocals for example, and also use your PCM91 as an external unit (through AES/ABU if you have a plus plate or an XITE, or analog through the A16)

If you have a higher budget, and want a higher end multichannel preamp, there's the focusrite ISA 828, the SPL gainstation 8 or the ams neve 4081 (quad mic preamp.. need 4 of these for an 16)

The advantage over a mixer is that you can get the 32 inputs in less than 10u, which is great if you don't have the room for a big console.

If you have use for the console in addition to the scope mixers, then a good old analog soundcraft (like the delta that someone mentionned in another thread, or the studio series) will sound better than the yamaha 01V, and are more comfortable to use (but they're also bigger.. like 1m60 wide for a 32 channel mixer). The mackie onyx series have also very good preamps.

Cheers!
