cool. I never did move to Vista. XP has always served me very well but I'm hearing almost unanimous praise for Windows 7 so looking forward to giving it a try.

Re: Win7 Release date - Oct 12
I did a little bit of testing with the Win7 RC release last week and I agree it looks promising. I had to abandon my V7 "research" due to work constraints. Also I couldn't get my iLok PACE drivers to run under V7 so there was no point in going forward with it since I can't run it for normal daily work.
Generally, with these OS upgrades it takes 3rd-party vendors months or years to get around to releasing updated drivers or software revisions. I guess you all know that already anyway. So an Oct release date doesn't mean much to me unless I know I can load and install all the software I need to run my business. Maybe Oct of 2010

Agree with this, echoes my sentiments when I say that the OS itself is fine but production machines have needs beyond just the OS itself...krizrox wrote:Generally, with these OS upgrades it takes 3rd-party vendors months or years to get around to releasing updated drivers or software revisions. One thing I have found myself doing though in the last few years is booting into multiple OS's and segmenting things into areas where they make sense to be sandboxed. Win7 is currently my gaming partition, and it's hard to beat a free (until next year) OS for such a disposable pastime. I was going to migrate to Win7-64 for 3D work & large print stuff too (as they co-exist just fine with games) but found a few rather nasty issues with both under Win7's driver model change and OpenGL support so am currently waiting on the next Nvidia round of fixes for that OS. The last Win7 WHQL fixed almost all of them so it shouldn't be that long.
On the audio front though, I am going to have to dump 4 pieces of less expensive gear still to make the leap past Xp32. Thankfully nothing is terribly pricey on its own to replace but if I go new for everything I'll have spent $1200-1500 on that 'migration' when its all said & done. That also ignores other things that still run well on Xp32 that I haven't tried under Win7 yet, such as Emagic's venerable midi editor and lots of small specific utilities that are for specific tasks. Things like the Fs1r formant software and certain tools that fit into little niches in the workflow that larger DAW/Sequencer apps still overlook.

That's for prebuilt Vista PC's btw, I'm not sure if that applies to the OEM Vista copies you can buy (usually labelled as "for system builders only') as I think the 'upgrade' media will be supplied by the maker of the prebuilt PC.
Also a note that Nvidia has done well with their Win7 drivers and I've since dropped Xp64 (I think I mentioned that elsewhere on these forums.)
Windows based music is still stuck on Xp32 because I can't find a MOTU micro-express in stock on any US online shops, and I need it to replace an older midi interface that lacks drivers and to attach a few older midi controllers that also lack 64bit drivers for their usb ports. The ones I see on ebay are either the older model that I don't want, or too expensive (for the newer ones) to make it worth the bother versus a retail store that I can use for returns & so on.

Re: Win7 Release date - Oct 12
almost reasonbly priced...
i've been saying all along that Vista was WinME. when WinME came out, it was the transition to XP(and ME was crippled from birth). M$ made money twice. they'll do the same with Win7...

Re: Win7 Release date - Oct 12
ME was certainly transitional since it rolled up the 98SE stuff into an actual retail package and tried to pretty it up a bit, but 98SE actually brought quite a bit (usb support, proper driver model & support for class compliant devices etc) to the table that wasn't really available via retails since MS was heavily pushing Windows on presold/oem boxes during that era (or trying to use 98SE as leverage to do that at least.) ME was also completely nerfed, and in many cases you did actually have people requesting a 'downgrade', especially in the corporate sector (or an upgrade to NT/Win2k.) Business is business I guess.
Still, it will be nice to move on from Xp (without all the encumbrance MS was trying to achieve with Vista). Xp has served me well, but so did Windows for Workgroups 3.11 with the 32bit extensions and Mac OS 7 and I really have no desire to go back to either of them now.

Re: Win7 Release date - Oct 12
sure, but the point is that vista is the v5 release candidate. it's not v5.0. vista was never intended to be the destination, windows 7 was, but many customers will end up purchasing both. and actually, the long term plans are that win7 is just another stepping stone, the next level is planned, we just need to be trained first, and milked a few more times.
no doubt windows7 will be what 98 was and what XP was. it's just too bad that so many got bitten by the release candidate.

There's a destination?
I think you're right that the destination is their pocketbook. I would be more annoyed about it if it weren't for the fact that MS & Apple have brought computers to the point where they're cheap & mainstream (and therefore readily available & usable.)
In any case I think I'm going to preorder at least 1 copy to save $100, since I'm sure I'll have a use for it on at least one machine (and I've actually got 2 other machines that run solely on the release candidate now so they'll probably need it too.) MS did actually do a decent job of helping me prepare for Win7 by letting us run it in the meantime, I've gotten 2 installations in on my primary machine (7000beta & 7100RC) and know what works & what doesn't pretty well now. Aside from my hardware odds & ends the rest of the annoyances are the same as they are on Vista (having to launch certain apps with admin rights etc) so there's no major hangups I'm unaware of. I'll just need to invest the time in shifting my major workflow over to it (which may take a while.)
And just to be fair I'll be grabbing a copy of snow leopard as well, though I suspect it will be a few months (at minimum) before I leave 10.5 for it.

valis, any idea whether one will be able to install either 32bit or 64bit without having to decide at the time of purchase or not?

- Will I get 32-bit or 64-bit discs?
You’ll get both. Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged products include both 32- and 64-bit discs.
