Brainworx bx_digital - how is it for DSP+PCI bandwidth use?

Post by hesnotthemessiah »

From viewing the video on the Sonic Core site, the Brainworx bx_digital looks like a great plugin for mastering my tracks within Scope. But how much DSP does it use and does it put a lot of pressure on PCI bandwidth? Is it comparable to something like the STW Ambience A100 or STW Classic Plate P100 in terms of PCI bandwidth use?

I am using two Sonic Core (Version 2) Pros plus 3 Powercore cards on my PC. I currently end up using the Sonic Cores to the max in a mix running mostly compressors, eqs and filters plus one or two reverbs. Plus I end up using a couple of Powercores mainly for the Virus, VStation and DCoder synth plugins, plus the Filtroid filter and a reverb or two (Non Lin 2). With all these cards in my PCI slots, I think my main concern is with the PCI bandwidth usage of the bx_digital.

Thanks for any help and advice :)

bx uses nearly 2 dsps, and very little pci bandwidth.

Thanks Gary  . Only 2 DSPs :o plus very little bandwidth is good to read (unlike my bank account is going to be)!! :P

why we'd to worry with pci band babdwidth? is there any limitation if anyone uses all pci slots?
thanks

GREAT device!

A little hungry on the DSP, but excellent for final master stage.

I love my PCI cards - with my 3 x Powercores and 2 x Sonic Core Pros (V2) in my PC, I use a lot of PCI bandwidth. I have only really had problems in the past with using the STW Ambience A100 or STW Classic Plate P100 as these plugins, being reverbs, use up a lot of PCI bandwidth. I read, somewhere on PlanetZ, that the Brainworx bx_digital uses up a lot of resources so I thought I had better check what this meant exactly. I would have been very suprised if that had meant a lot of PCI bandwidth as the Brainworx bx_digital is a L/R & M/S mastering EQ so shouldn't use up a lot of PCI bandwidth. So, firubbi, it's not really to do with the amount of PCI slots you use for your DSP cards but rather the types and amount of plugins you run on them. Hope that made some sense!

Thanks for your opinion siriusbliss. :)

It's an Asus P4S800 with a Pentium4 3Ghz CPU and has 5 PCI slots. I have had it a few years now. Running Cubase VST5, I use it mainly for drums and mixing (within Scope). I use a Dual Core PC for running more plugins - this has just 3 PCI slots (and no PCIE) so I use a Magma 13 slot PCI chasis to run 4 UAD1s and 2 more Powercore cards. Audio is routed via ADAT from the Dual Core PC (using Frontier Design Dakota and Montana soundcards) back into my Sonic Core cards running on the Pentium 4 PC. Only problems I have now are a noisey dual core PC (need to get a quite PSU) and a lack of disk space on Pentium4 - infact the hard drive is a complete mess with all the updates and crap I have installed and removed in the past.
