Does This Have Too Much Reverb?

Post by braincell »

First serious music on my new computer. I am borrowing a saxophone tomorrow which I intend to be able to play within 2 weeks. I've been playing the WX5 breath controller a lot. I found that Cubase "Quick Controls" with breath mapped to volume is great. Then I set it to filter the cc so no midi cc is recorded. This is important as midi cc has a huge CPU cost. It seems to be much more efficient to use Cubase automation.

The verb sounds O.K. to me as it places different depth for each instrument.
Bass Clarinet is left of center and dry, and the Brass, Harps are mixed well.
The Piano sounds fine too but the excessive pedalling gets muddy IMHO.
That's always a problem when trying to do half pedalling or harmonic pedlalling on a basic off/on pedal appraoch.
Real nice peice though.

Thanks. I can't wait to add the sax. It's a rare one. He says it's dark and not loud. It should add a human touch to the music and maybe distract from the muddy piano. I'll check the horn reverb setting when I get home. Maybe I forgot to put a send on it.

Dark will work, the piece is on the dark side, so it should fit right in.
Try some of those cool effects like the SSB Modulator and see if it makes certain phrases of the Sax stand out. Avant Garde style of music is lots of fun to experiment with.

That is the kind of jazz I like although I realize most people don't like avant garde anything.

Most musicians are opened minded.
I love organized and unorganized sound, which is in a nutshell music.
The thing is with Avant Garde, there's no real description.
I love John Cage, and was priveldged enough as a young punk to watch Julius Hemphill live in the Village in NYC several times while I was recording Southern Rock down the street.
Then on the way back to our apartment I would stop and watch Punk Rock one night, Zydeco another night. NYC was the shit back in the '70's.
Now everybody hides out in their Soviet cubicles are hardly sees live music.
Thankfully in Vegas there is nothing but live.
You just have to get away from the Strip and the Guided tours...
You should check out Julius Hemphill live @ Storyville. He played with a monster Pianist who I admire named Harold Mayburn. That old dude played everything, and as a Pianist, one should.
I can't understand musicains that classify themselves as Classical or Jazz or Rock.
To not play or listen to other styles IMHO is just being close minded.
I actually enjoy placing ideas from one style into another.
It often works....

I like several genres of music but not all. Some I can appreciate but have no interest in and others are worthless IMHO.

Well it turns out to have a sticky key but I played it enough to know I can master this thing. Getting an overhaul would cost $400 so I might as well just buy a new one. I ordered an intermediate "Selmer" from the scratch and dent at musicians friend. It's Chinese. Snobs don't like them but a lot of people do.
