adding a 1st generation board ?

Post by bill3107 »

I have a 21 dsp system now (2 2d gen boards) and a friend of mine have given me a pulsar1 as he doesn't play music anymore. My question is simple : adding 4 dsp may add power so it may be worth it Buuuuuuuuut.... is it a good idea as it is a 1st gen board ? As i often use P100 and A100 for example.... I know a whole system made of 1st gen would not be a good idea. What happens when only one board is 1st gen ? Thanks.

Hi Jo,

As long as it is not the host, it just add dsp power (don't come into play with the PCI communication).

cheers

sorry to disagree, but it will decrease your current PCI bus performance for about 30%
at least that's what I read from the masterverb tests with mixed systems

:-?

that would prevent me from adding this board. Even a luna would do a better job so ...

still have my orignal P1 and older SRB in my system - not as the host board though - and it hasn't slowed bus speed to any large degree on my system.
It's great to have all the extra I/O.

Just try it out.I have no problems running a pulsar 2 and 2 pulsar1.I reach full dsp load without problems on a dell p4 2.8 with ht on.
Including flexor mods and reverb/delay etc.Atleast for me pci bus overload is a non issue,it never happens in real producing situations...knocks on wooooooood.
I get 12 Masterverbs until overflow.

you'd probably get 16-18 with only 2nd generation boards, but then you'd lack the 8 DSPs of the Pulsar Ones and wouldn't have enough processing power to enjoy them... :D

of course there are no problems with Masterverbs, but Jo has the A100 (probably wants to use > 1 instance) and that thing eats PCI bus cycles for breakfast - you have no idea of it's hunger :o :D
I guess a single instance is about 5 Masterverbs...
it's an exceptional plugin, you just can't leave it out once you know it ;)

Yes tom, I use only STW and DAS reverbs and performance really matters ... I will try to exchange it with a luna may be or just keep a 21 dsp system. Let's see what Xite will bring and I will decide what to do (as I use a macbook pro with a presonus lightpipe that receive 32 ADAT from my Scope PC). Thank you guys for your advice !
