Another suggestion please about standalone VSTi

Hi
i got another question that cant find answer on searching here.
If i use standalone VSTi along with cubase,which devices should i set to each?so i can record the midi playing thru the standalone with cubase.
I'm not good at this tech/midi thingy.Please educate me.
