Scope with Windows 98SE?

Post by fraz »

Hi,

How well does Scope run on Windows 98SE? - The reason I'm asking is I have an old Pentium 3 mainboard with RAM and CPU and have earmarked this as a system with which to run some old software utilities that edit patches on one or two of my synths but the editors in question only work on Windows 98 or 98SE and as I'm considering upgrading or buying another Scope card I thought it good to ask just how is Scope under 98SE. - Before anyone starts... :D ...I'm aware it won't run as well as Version 4.5 of the software or even version 4!

Is it correct to assume that Version 3.1 is the last software that will work under 98SE? - As it is I'm not overly keen on using 98SE but it will do one or two things that XP won't do and I know it sounds daft n stupid but when I upgraded the newer PC (Pentium 4) to XP Scope 4 was immediately an improvement overall but my SW1000XG drivers were not as steady under XP as they were under 98SE! - And when tweaking cut / res in realtime on the XG Edit my PC just crashed..... ...that was bad!

Anyhow, I'm learning SFP but am not advanced yet so really just asking in a long winded way... :P ...what is the extent that SFP 3.1 can be used? - Someone mentioned bugs a while back...

imho Scope runs much better under Win98 than under Win2K, but the latter was dissed for that purpose anyway.

Of course I cannot really tell as I refuse to install XP, but I don't see any fundamental difference in the media implementation between XP and W2k.
I appreciate any hint to enlighten my limited knowledge in this domain... ;)

Win98 boots (at least) 5 times faster and it doesn't have the midi problems of XP
I don't see a reason why Scope 4.5 shouldn't run under Win98 either, as I've had version 4 installed once - at least if memory isn't betraying me...
I have a 4.5 image that I could install to verify.

the bigger problem might be screen drivers for wide-screens that often lack native Win98 support. It's not a fundamental problem, as 3rd party software can easily add the modified settings. Card manufacturers just spare the extra work...

but there's a lot of (native) software compiled with systems that won't run under Win98 anymore.
you will have memory problems if you need huge sample sets due to Win98's limited address space.

cheers, Tom
(yes, I run SFP 3.1c under Win98)

Thanks.

I do have 3.1b on a disc but not 3.1c. Is there much difference IE bugs? - I'll have a think. I read on the Creamware site a while back that Version 4 wouldn't work with 98...obviously it does!

v4 does. if you're using v3, i'd use 3.1c.

xp works very well, indeed. 98 takes a bit more tweaking, but once tweaked runs great.

actually I didn't tweak my Win98 at all (except a few obvious settings in device manager), but then I don't have any sequencer monster running... :D
As long as Scope is more or less a soundgenerating and processing box that communicates via Adat it's almost a 'fire and forget' (outch...) solution

cheers, Tom

yes, scope itself runs just fine by itself in either environment.

I have 3.1b and Version 4 but not 3.1c. Is 3.1c still available via a link somewhere?

Install 4. It's identical to 3.1c apart the yellow logo, a fixed bug in name of the re-saved projects under new name and slightly optimized in the loading times, for what i can see here. The drivers are the same.
