Scope ASIO

Post by husker »

Just read an interesting comment from Craig Anderton in a t.c. electronics konnekt 24d review - for those that complain about CW software/drivers - don't forget we already have very good ASIO :-)

"In a previous post, I tested several programs with the Konnekt 24D, and was able to get reliable operation with 128 samples (and even 64 samples with Tracktion), but couldn't get Sonar 6 to work reliably with anything less than 256 samples.

This raised a few eyebrows on the Sonar forum, so I did some extra testing. I tested Sonar 6 with the Creamware SCOPE interface and got reliable operation over ASIO at 3 milliseconds, and with the E-Mu 1820m ASIO at 4 milliseconds This was a somewhat more complex testing environment that the other tests, as it had a few drum tracks and an AmpliTube2 plug-in.

Therefore, it seems the Sonar latency issue is related to the driver in the Konnekt 24D. Scott from ADK pointed out that RME ended up having to do some driver tweaks for Sonar; I seem to recall someone at Creamware saying basically the same thing.

This may be one of those "1.0" deals. For example, it took a few revs before the 1820m drivers were rock solid with Sonar. But I don't know if this is something in the Konnekt 24D, or in the way it interacts with my machine."

missing my stupid Win98 since I installed Win2K on the Scope machine, just to be able to try out a couple of 'modern' plugins...

heehe
wow you are really kind of futuristic type of guy?

DOS 6.22 still rulez, but driver situation is not as good as it could be at the moment. :D

seriously the step from win98 to 2000/XP was a good one. 98 harly worked for more than one day without a crash.
:)

XP is rock solid these days, the only thing that su**s with it is that you need to reinstall it once a year because registry and other stuff fills up with crappy entries which slow down your system.
That never really changed with any ms os. :P

apart from directx 10 I see no point for an vista upgrade.

transparent windows - no way :D

OK back on subject :-)

The saga of the drivers for the Konnekt 24D is quite interesting - a lot of problems with Mac's especially. It is a useful reminder that even with a lot of resources, it very difficult to bring a new product to market AND achieve reliablity. FireWire especially is a bit of a nightmare (and USB of course, but that seems have been abandoned for audio thankfully).

Another intertesting aspect is that while even while ASIO buffer is set to 64 samples (and around 2 ms latency) the actual latency once it gets through the various layers and FireWire is around 15ms - ouch!

So don't take for granted what we have with the current PCI Scope solution - a replacement that gets anywhere near the quality and reliability is a long way off, and going to take a lot of investment from SonicCore - are they up to it?
