Loudness VM-2412

Post by grappa »

Hi,

Finally managed to drag my Scope rig out of storage after a protracted house move and boy have I got some catching up to do :).

D/L'd the fab VM 2412 and ran some comparison tests on a drum track last night to have a listen at this new fangled Valve simulation thang that seems to have appeared in my abscence.

When I switched to the VM I nearly fell of my seat, quickly had a quick look at the meters as it sounded off the scale however the signal was actually 1db less than the original! Spent the next hour trying to understand why :)

Loved the sound but I am tying myself up in nots trying to work out why I perceive this as being so much louder when it plainly isn't?

Fletcher Munsen?

Any help appreciated.

OK

This question was either very stupid or very hard to answer :)

Hi, If you're talking about the VM-1242 mixer that sharc & I made, then I'm glad you like the sound. That mixer has some subtle dynamics hidden away in the mix & bus stages. Hope that explains enough to you for now

btw, it's still not 100% tested & finished, so soon there will be an improved version !!

regards,

Shroomz,

Sorry - I am talking about your mixer and it's fantastic!

Just wish you'd slow down as I have just noticed your new device and I'm not going to see my wife again tonight!

loudness is different that peak level. when the average level is higher, things seem louder. the meters don't measure loudness, which is about perception. the meters aren't even equally responsive to all frequencies or transients........

the "tube saturation" effect is basically a subtle compression. less dynamics=louder sounding at the same volume.
