Pedal Steel Guitar Library !!

Post by dawman »

I love traditional American instruments, and Bluegrass music, always have. I know there are no synths, but the hairs on my arms stand up when someone plays a great Pedal steel.

One must use the two pedals to bend certain strings while others remain unaffected, and the precision of the slide is crucial 4 bringing that dreary, mesmerizing sound. I just love it.

A developer has sent me an instrument that uses all of the new developments using iMIDI, legato portamento, which when you hold down the lowest note on the keyboard, turns the following notes into slides, while others are not bent !! It sounds incredibly realistic. It is a small sample of the countless articulations he is doing 4 me as we speak. I am elated, as I was hitting a brick wall using a different library which wasn't made as a pedal steel, but rather a zither. This is a whole new ball game.

Ever heard a Pedal Steel through a Leslie, or w/ a phaser, or hard panned w/ an LFO as your modulation source? I am having a blast, and plan on incorporating this instrument in a big way. I am a firm believer that new sounds, if used correctly can make viable hook lines in commercial, and non commercial songs. The right patch, etc. has always been my way to get gigs, and had some luck w/ the Oberheims in recordings I did. But this developement is gonna turn the sampling world upside down IMO. As the only Pedal Steel samples i have heard, really suck fat butts, and are always recordings and loops of a real player. That is very lame compared to this.

I will not be using this 4 country and western music, as I have a difficult time playing that boring ass, dog howling, JoeBob baloney. I will be using an overdriven Leslie pre-amp emu ( spaceF ) through Celmo's Tape Simulator, and Mehdis' FAT BASTARD, all while an LFO will pan each mono channel from L to R, thereby morphing the 2 different effects ( mono channel #1..flanger, and mono channel #2 Celmos Talkbox ). Well you get the idea. The possibilities are extreme. I hope to be the first to pull this off. I also hope when I get back from my gig in Atlantic City, I will have this ready in Cubase w/ GuruB, sorry I mean GaryB's help in Cubase, so I can finally send some of my twisted compositions here 4 you guys to hear, along w/ some old recordings I did w/ the Allman Brothers, Head East, and others. My first lesson w/ GaryB will be Friday. In one month I expect to deliver on my promise, or be driven by embarrasement to leave the Z. I have used hardware sequencers w/ 512 ppq, and 384 ppq 4 20 + years, and can do some serious tricks via automation, but I have the hardest time w/ all of these little bitty windows, and terminology, plus the girls voice on the training video only distracted me as I was wondering what she looked like, and if she had an awesome rack, etc.

Brotha' Man Hubird,
Have you ever heard the Classical Wave Emulator by Celmo. I was hoping to understand what it is. And BTW is that a Theramin used for the melody of the original series Star Trek ? I am in one of those support the third party developer moods agian, and Wilma's buying, so I must act quickly before she finds a reason to get mad at me again.

wanne get yourself a kick?
Try the Wavelength's OP8, it not only a beast, it has also different sound generating sources like a SID-like machine, and the sound comes even close to JB's Solaris regarding pure sound quality :-)
It's Stephen's last synth, he put all his knowledge and beloved concepts in it, it's his masterpiece so to say.
for the price of a few vegas cocktails :-D

I was reading an in depth explanation of that synth when I was looking into SFP. I forgot all about that synth. Just the name is what caught my attention. It sounded like an Oberheim emu maybe. Yeah I'll look into that one again.
I realize I act like a dame shopping 4 clothes all the time. But in the hardware world, especially analog, it's hard to buy everything you like, but the virtual world of synths are way cheap compared to that.

My Oberheims are shedding tears as we speak, I shall go comfort them, and remind them of their desirability.

agree, you have to know them before you can lay them aside.
and they are always there in case of :-)

Yet it feels like freedom to have made up my mind lately about my start setups in SFP as well as Cubase.
OP8 and sparC are ready to play with from start :-D
Even crunched to the bottem the sound is great, but they can also go to hell, a lot of sounds are actually soundscapes, under a finger.

This should do it, to start with, and if I need something else, it's there.
If nothing helps, my old Virus is also there, to get sentimental...don't underrate it's filtered baselines with a sawtooth and some suboscillator added...velocity sensitive, playing the envelop sensitivity, that really grooves.

Maybe I will end up with only using the MD and MnM, at the time I still need the link with computer sequencing, and them 4 will be a natural team together anyway.
I think I'm glad my job isn't about covering given sounds of all kinds, much respect tho for what you are doing :-)
To see you organizing your (playing) setup including the stickers on the keys must have triggered me to organize Cubase in connection with the Elektrons.
F.e. all different channels for the playing modes of the Monomachine are grouped together, to keep things organized visually.
Let me stop.
cheers :-)

The thread started off as bluegrass, and pedal steels. Once again, we have little control over ourselves, as the return to synthesis demonstrates.
