is this the solution for less pci slots in newer mobos??

A place to talk about whatever Scope music/gear related stuff you want.

does anybody have an experiance in these?
seem so nice keeping creamware cards away from pc box.
but is it effective?
can one pci slot get the data amount from 2 or 3 cards?
is this also workable through pcix and scope cards?

I am currently using two of these in the same DAW. One of them has 7 x slots and hosts 2 x Scope II cards. The other one has 13 slots and hosts 4 x UAD-11 cards. These are interfaced with two 33MHZ PCI slots. As long as you configure them properly so that there are no IRQ conflicts, they provide plenty of bandwidth.

have you tested compared to putting the cards directly on motherboard?

i see that i can buy seperate pieces as well.
do you think that it might be possible to just buy the basics and put my own box and own psu in order not to spend so much on the complete box that magma offers?

There are not enough motherboard slots available on my system to test this configuration without the Magma's.

There definitely are issues using RME HDSP audio cards and 4 x UAD-1 cards in the same Magma chassis and squeezing all that throughput across the bandwidth of a single PCI slot in the mobo. In order to get this many PCI cards working on the same DAW, 2 x Magma's were necessary and one of them had to host *only* UAD-1 cards. I can only speculate at this time that the same issues would exist with Pulsar cards since due to the DSP usage, they likely use even more bandwidth than RME HDSP cards.

I see there are PCI Express and Expresscard connection newly avalable.
Indeed that is the artificial respriration to scope on MoBos that have no or few PCI slots.

But the price is still too high IMHO
In order to use the PCIe adapter on a Magma host card, it must be one of the newer ones with the round SCSI cable. The older chassis' with the 80 pin flat cable will not work with the PCIe adapter (unfortunate because these are relatively cheap and easy to find)

Thanks for the information. Is this a solution to use in a mac pro running xp for DAW purposes?

That way I could use macosx for design purposes and regular stuff and when booting into windows XP, I could use it as my DAW.

In theory I'd say yes. I'm not all that familiar with what manner of gremlins may be lurking on a Mac when running windows, but if that is really viable, then you should be able to pull it off.
