Matching Levels In Solaris

Post by dawman »

The CEM's in Solaris are sweet, but their volume is much lower than the other sound sources. Because I use 8 voice polyphony I set the poly level to 34, since master volume knob is programmable per preset. Even then I found the CEM's were unacceptably low in db's. hence the cure. I crank up the filters volumes on the vintage LP ( stock ), and add EQ, and OD from the effects section. This improves the sound of the patch, and also adds the desired volume. Marco Paris's CEM Pad preset is good to try this on if you are not a veteran programmer, as it is a bare CEM preset w/o the bells and whistles.

I since have matched up all of my presets and added OD, and the 3band EQ to all of them as it gives the sound sources some added presence. This synth is incredibly deep, and sounds more analog everytime I sit down and program it. My fiancee says when i go to the Planet Solaris, that I shouldn't be bothered. Rightly So.

I like this synth better than my Oberheim combos, as far as programmabilities go. Those two are hard to beat in a live venue for sheer FATNESS. But no other DSP, or VST synth comes close to Solaris for analog emulation. Additive,PhysMod, and FM emulations will be good additions when I start using Cubase 4. Almost forgot, FM7 from NI sounds very thin to me, but was going to buy that till I saw John B.'s thread on another synth naming contest. in which he states his latest creation from Mt. Olympus, the FM, DSP based synth. Will he ever cease to amaze us? Not !!!
I will buy that instead, as I'm sure that dog will hunt.

FMHeaven,.....Can't Wait.
BTW, I saw your picture in my thread,... you and Shroomz added some nice needed humor to it, thank you. Whenever i get serious about something, I always hope someone will rescue me with comic relief, afterall, I have a reputation to keep here.

O.K. where would you like them sent? Remember to download the JD800 samples from the forum for the WAV Oscillators. If you like them I will send some D50 samples which have worked very well for me. They basically made my Solaris into a D50 Plus, as I absolutely loved three presets that made some records become hits IMHO.
The preset makers that John chose were excellant. Have you upgraded to 4.1? Also Kymeia has some great RD presets, and Ben Walker too. Mine are created for reasons only I know. I always have both hands playing so my presets are based on live experiences doing just that. Fast attack pads with long releases are my favorite. Plus CC control to change the whole soundscapes in real time.
