You've tried all sync combos, no change?

the problem is definitely master/slave related(since the api is new and not broken). i use the sp/dif connection all the time.

A16 master solved everything

Post by Wired »

thankx z members, all is well, i made the A16ultra master, and connected a bnc cable from the out of the a16 to the in of the api A2D, and wow, no jitter, and what a difference, its way better sounding, cw is awesome, ...thus i use the a16 as a i/o to the real world, but finalize everything thru the api spdif and i don't need a wordclock, ....my only question now is , Is the line level ins on the api going thru the pre 312's or just thru the converters?

mic pre vs line

Post by Wired »

so the audio does not have to pass thru the mic xlr to get the 312 pre, it can happen at the line 1/4 inch line input?

yeah, the hiz input on a mic pre is really for instrument level(guitar/bass) not line level. it's a holdover from the days of hiz mics. it can handle line level signals as well, of course, and it's popular to run synths and mixes through it .

on your pre, they have decided to name the hiz input "line" although they could have named it "intstr" or "hiz" or even "mic". whether or not the best sound comes from using the api instead of just going back in the a16 is up to your ears. you are going through the pres though. the gain controls still work, no?

yes, as you say

gain controls work, up to 27 db, and then the volume for the atod out, which i think should be close as possible to zero for full significant bits, ...and yes, gary, the a to d is awesome, the image huge, more "space" in the landscape, things sit nice in the mix, and i put my compressor between the lines in and the atod, it is better than the a16, however, the a16 is an important bridge, but then again, ... i'm sure a prism converter sounds better than apogee.

compressor before api

Post by Wired »

change that i put the comp before the api, so that the api pres are before atod conversion, ...i probably don't have to dither into vdat and can leave it as 16bit as my analog signal is going into the api, then spdif, ...,
