AES/EBU?

I just realised my Pulsar 2 plus has one of these ios but I don't seem to have an corresponding AES/EBU io in Scope's Hardware IO dropdown - just SPDIF, ADAT and SMUX (whatever that is)

what is it used for?

use the sp/dif modules for the aes i/o. didn't you just try it yet?

Well I wasn't really sure what to try it with - it looks like a standard XLR (not digital like I thought SP-DIF was) so can I use it for a mic input or another audio in/out for example or is there only certain types of hardware it will work with?

aes/ebu and sp/dif are very similar digital standards. they can be easily converted one to the other(hosa makes an inexpensive converter). the main difference is that aes/ebu is balanced and uses xlr connectors, while sp/dif is unbalanced and uses rca connectors....

aes/ebu is stereo DIGITAL. you can't just put a mic into it. the source has to be a stereo digital one. xlr is not nessessarily for mics, it's for any 3 conductor balanced standard. xlr could be line level, mic level or digital, depending on the type of gear.

smux uses two sets of adat light pipe to get 8 channels of 24/96 audio. normally, two sets of adat light pipe gives 16 channels of 24/48 audio max.

Sorry to come back to this thread but I have a practical issue related to it now. I am about to purchase a Line6 Toneport UX2 for my Variax. It has an SPDIF connector and I thought since this is the same as the AES/EBU one but just with different jacks can I use the AES/EBU in to accept audio from the Toneport and if so how do I join them - is there some sort of adapter jack I can purchase (hopefully cheaply)

yes, but levels are different as well.

i'd get an sp/dif-aes/ebu adaptor like this:

not as cheap as you'd like, but still not expensive and they work fine.

Too much to make it worth it though. I'll just have to use the USB link I suppose (if it works with scope)

sure, it will work thru the sequencer....or, just use the analog connection. it will be just fine!
