This is a really interesting article about creating true stereo mixes.Its all about how the brain percieves distance and position of sound from the minute delay between the 2 ears hearing the sound.
Check it out interesting for mixing I think

... but the technigue may be less succesfull, if you need mono compatibility.

If an instrument changes position the relative distance to each ear, the phase, changes. So none of our analog or digital mixers are correct. By design, and also for mono compatibility as Immanuel mentions.
I like to link a phasemod to one output of a panMod, both being controlled from the same ValMonitor/constVal. This way, panning to one side will delay the signal on the other a little bit and vice versa. Sample Delay would do the same trick, but is not as tweakable. Also the STM series has sample delay on each side of stereo tracks.
While I can't think of many mono playback devices nowadays, it may be good practice to check for mono compatibility anyways, also to be sure you didn't overdo the phase thing :lol:
