I've been trying to decide on the optimal default setup which will include asio drivers to see if there is a difference in terms of sound quality and CPU (disk space is irrelevent). However when trying the 32bit flt drivers I seem to get horrible noises from the standalone versions of Reaktor and Kontakt - it doesn't affect the plugins. I was hoping to use 32 flt as my standard as I thought since most apps use it internally it would reduce CPU hit but if it's going to clash with some apps should I stick to the 24 bit drivers?

In my opinion, you can use 24 bit drivers and get superb quality.

If you do some processing in the sequencer, just limit the number of operations. A good way to do this is by running the effects live, and then mixing down the entire track.

Thanks - does anyone know why I get those horrible noises in NI apps though? - I thought most audio apps use 32bit float internally which is why I chose that driver.

Cubase and Wavelab are the the most likely apps to support 32bit ASIO drivers. NI's apps in all likelihood do NOT and therefore you're experiencing some errata.
