Kinda found it interesting, as I was just day dreaming today, to think of my composition process as a collaboration between several different composers living in my head. Don't want to sound coo-coo, but I think many of us can relate to this. As for me, it goes something like this:

The manager: that's me trying to be objective
The scientist: the guy that tries to be innovative
The artist: the guy who wants something of artistic/historical value, the guy who questions "why" a piece needs to be written
The club dude: the guy who wants a tune to be dance-able, and also to have punchy kicks and bass lines
The funk dude: wants a band formation, and wants lots of syncopation
The orchestral dude: wants harmony and great melody
The pop dude: wants a top 40 hit and wants lots of money
The bored dude: just wants to get something done cuz he's bored

Most of my productions seem to depend on which of the 8 starts the project, who writes the parts, who performs, who mixes, and who does the final check.

Well, to take the dream out of the metaphore, I'm just saying that people tend to have multiple sets of aesthetics they compose under. What are yours?

Interesting dream you had Ken.

Well, I think about it while I write this sentences down (dangerous, I know).

The technic freak: He really enjoies the fact that electric power can be transformed into music. He likes all those knobs that can be manipulated. He lives in a chaos of cabels and always wishes to have a wall full of screens. He likes the odour of electric power.

The scientist: He really likes to experiment with new tools. He gets bored when he has to do the same stuff everyday. He always tries to find something new. His dream is to reinvent the wheel. He is very sensitive and meticulous in his work and he don´t like to be disturbed once he runs another experiment.

The Believer: He always thanks god or whatever steers him, for his given talent.
He feels guilty, though.
He has to use his talent whatever it costs.
He really believes that making music is a given task to him. He feels chosen out.

The Dreamer: He think that the whole world is full of tones, every tree, flower or whatever has its own signature of frequencies.
And when the right mood is given, he can communicate with all those objects around him. When he closes his eyes and play a lovely sound he gets bodiless and levitates in a world of noises.

The Junkie: Once the mood has arrived when
everything flows and everything comes together like all tooth wheels build an functional unity. When music becomes a straight way, from a thought, through his mind, brought down with his fingers into music like talking to a person.
Then he feels very drugged, he can´t stop to be a part of music himself, he just works like a translator of moods to music.
He really likes this special time and always tries to reach this being again and again.
This is better then sex.
It is like having sex with music.

Finally, if the result of the process to make music finds an audience, when the listeners of his music understand and were set themselves into the mood and they cheers you, I can say "I´ve done my task."

hey paul! It's been a while. Been going through some tough times, with the school and all. (I got accepted to Florida International Univ) Anyhow, the darned people at the admissions office lost my paperwork and now my acceptance is delayed 'till next semester. They did get everything straight in the end tho. Kind of an unbelievable situation, but under the Florida sun I suppose anything is possible. So now I'm trying to find some projects to work on in the meanwhile. It's tough being a rogue right after getting married.. My wife's handling it quite well tho.

well...

chris and ken...

At least you always have someone to talk to!

Because I have worked alone a lot (I bathe regularly so it can't be that)I have the basic studio characters all rolled into one.

I have to be the tech/engineer guy to get sounds and mic things, then I have to be the creative musician and play the parts, then I have to edit and mix and put on the producer's hat. Sometimes I have to be some of each at the same time to get the job done.

Ohterwise it's always the same two guys fighting it out: the guy who gets things done and the guy who puts things off.
