But it's a great ideea! There are heatsinks with heat pipes, so you may act on your dreams sooner than you thought

@Bingo - well there's one heat pipe fantasy that I've clearly been on the receiving end of for some years ! But true, when I next upgrade (my computer not my chosen tipple !) there may be some heat-piping that's more than a pipe dream ....

I know you won't believe this, but the 4 Seagate 160GB SATA disks... and the 2 Opteron 244's that I just put onto a Tyan K8W motherboard... (PSU is an Antec True550 EPS12V)

The system is pretty darn quiet. I was shocked. The fans on the more recent Opterons are quiet, and the newer Seagates are excellent. Make sure you use STEEL case, not aluminum, if you really want things to be quieter.

I guess for a fraction of the price, you could get a hand made 1m^3 steel cabinet to put your normal cabinet into. If you add a 22mm MDF board on the inside of the front, you may even be able to use it for a sub woofer too. Just keep the magnet on a good distance from the hard PC (unconventional box shape).

And the good part is, that you will still be able to take your PC out for gigs.

this applies only to alloy foils, which are in fact a good (and annoying) resonator - as can be experienced with the cheap 'Shuttles'.

The parts in the design above are extruded profiles, which hardly have any resonance peaks.
From the thermal viewpoint this is at least 5 times as effective as a steel case, not to mention an acoustically 'plated' steel case.

For non-mass fabricated parts the price isn't oustandingly high.
I have a fanless PSU for 150 Euro and just ordered a fanless CPU cooler (the 'tower' AndreD mentioned) for 79 Euro.
Add 150 Euro for a 19" rackmount (the ugly industrial design) this makes nearly 400 Euro.
But still I'd have to cut a square in the sidedoor (the cooler won't fit elseway), a heatpipe for the graphcard and something to get rid of the heat the harddisks develope would be required.

Small P4 equipped desktop systems with a similiar design sell for about 2.500 Euro.

Of course it all makes only sense if the sound of moving air is higher than the spinning noise of the disks...

I have the 7200 Barracudas and a cheapo version with 5400 rpm.
WD and Maxtor are just too noisy for my taste, but I'll check the 160 SATA Seagates next time - ahhmmm... if they run under Win98.

I have a Mac Powerbook G4 1.5ghz that runs completely silent. I use it for Logic and can track vocals or Ac guitars in the same room with NO bleed (it really is that quiet)

If CW would get the Mac OSX thing going I would buy a Magma chassis and dump my PC altogether.

QuietPC is where I got my AcoustiCase from. The guys have great support in Canada. Michael even used to build DAW's before working for QuietPC so he was a wealth of information.
