So I was in the local CG yesterday and they had a Mini Moog

As the title states,

Yesterday I was bored and decided to go to the local GC and play some drums and waste time, I walk into the synth department and they had a Mini Moog set up for sale that they were letting people use aswell as a DX7, but I had to get my hands wet with the moog.

The CW mini's interface is like a perfect 1:1, but the sound, hrmm, the moog does not seem to have the high end as the minimax yet the minimax seems to have about 70% less phatness in the lows. I will however say that the minimax sounds very close to the minimoog minus the bass freq's.

I truelly think with some filtering and a boost on the low end the minimax could sound nearly identical. One thing I noticed was that the filter on the minimax did not seem nearly as deep as the actual moog does, but this is what was odd, the "iterpoles" filter seems to be nearly identical as the actual moog and isnt the minimax supposed to have the same -24db filter as the interpole?

I think I am going to start running the minmax thru the interpole and then run something like a TC EQsat on the input to emulate something like renbass plug and see how that sounds.

I gotta say, while the original minimoog is a true monster, having software emulations is just soo much easier lol, who ever was using the moog before me had all the dials tweaked to the point of the synth just make a static thump producing no sound, with in a few seconds I had a sweet ultra deep bass reminiscent of a Depechmode style, was cool.

I think stock sound, the minimax sounds moor like a moog source, which is like a revision of a minimoog with presets.

Just sharing a random thought I found interesting on how the two compare in sound, nothing scientific of course, just by ear

Cheers!

Well, the MiniMoog model that CW used to make MiniMax from had a highpass filter so that the filter resonance wouldn't break speakers. Perhaps that has been removed in the new MiniMoog? That could account for the extra bass. As for the highs, it could be that they had different speakers at GC. You can't really do an exact comparison between MiniMoog and MiniMax unless you had them in the same system.

Frankly, I've gotten plenty of bass out of MiniMax; I don't think I'd want any more!!

I've never heard 2 Mini Moogs that sounded alike. And considering that there were 4 different versions of it, that just adds to the confusion as to what one "should" sound like.

All I can say is that I like the sound of the Mini Max, so what if it doesn't sound exactly like an original.

I just sold an original minimoog after buying the Creamware system. True, it does not have as much bass, however, in the mix, the creamware minimax sounds much better. It stands out more, where the minimoog gets lost and tends to sound muddy. Contrary to how it appears at first touch, it takes so much longer to program. When you have it just right, the tune drifts. When you re-tune it, the sound you designed doesn't quite sound the same. By itself in the store it might seem like a good idea, but when you get it home, it becomes a real pain in the neck! Also, with what I sold it for, I bought a scope professional card, an A16 ultra, The Prodessey, and the B2003.

I know what ya mean,

Thats why I said I was just going by ear and nothing scientific, monitors of course will make a huge difference, this moog was an old dog, I think it had a date on, just cant remember, they only wanted $1390.00 for it, I just was toolin around with it.

I do think the reason the CW sounds so good and can stand out in a mix is the chorusing and effects plus the hi's on it that I did not get from the original, either way, I sold my moog once I aquired the Minimax, so that should let you know where I stand in the comparison
