dust collectors
Just read ROONSMITS post and I think a dust collectors thread would offer some amusement amongst all this serious talk.
I also have a KOrg EX800, Yamaha TX7, numerous old Apple computers (SE, IIX, etc.)A broken Wurlitzer electric piano (outputs only noise, and I can't find anyone who knows how to fix things like this anymore), but my biggest and best dust collector of all: The Emulator EIII Rack Mount fully loaded; no longer outputs any sound, which is sad, because it sounded fabulous!(and it cost me as much as a nice car would have in 1990!)

well, I have nothing to contribute to the topic, since I'm obviously a dust collector's collector
but wait, yes - there's the synth core of the DX200 groovebox which I removed in favour of a midi connected TX7
that box is a nice controller for the FM7 and recently I've tried with a demo of that app. The TX was switched over to the regular keyboard and since it's mono I usually spice it with a little SPX90 - what would I be without SFP routing, btw
So I had a mixture of TX7 and FM7 through the same gear and I must say they complement nicely... the thin and a little metallic background from the FM, the more beefy stuff from the TX
I'm really beginning to like FM7 for it's interface and (see above) for the additional sound flavour - but it was undeniable that the native app just couldn't catch up with certain sounds.
This is no dissing - that day I was about to buy a 2nd hand copy of FM7, but someout did outbid me.
Btw it was an interesting experience how much influence the access to sound control can have. I could turn the knobs on the DX200 and FM7 did some really cool things.
Too bad it can load the DX7 lib sounds but cannot not return them back after modification - at least that's how I interpret the doc.
cheers, Tom

Durned right! If I had known when I signed up that PlanetZ can be "fun" I surely would not have registered in the first place...On 2004-06-28 16:06, nprime wrote:

NPrime have you tried fixing the Wurlitzer or the EIII? They could be straightforward...?
I don't really have any dust collectors 'cuz I use even the most bizarre tools I have available.

Nevertheless I'm having a ball these days playing with an old '80s Yamaha PTX-8 trigger-to-MIDI converter. Built like a brick house. Great for turning recorded drums into synth or processed drums. Also great for turning vocals into very weird effects...
Oh, actually I do have a couple of busted Sennheiser MD421s that are collecting dust. I got 'em for free but haven't figured out how to fix them. If anyone has schematics or knows anything about MD421s please let me know.

Cool thread BTW!
Johann
I don't know anything about fixing them but I wish you luck. Those are incredible mics! Toms, guitar cabs, & just about everything you can think of. They're probably the most versatile mics knwon to man!On 2004-06-28 17:54, blazesboylan wrote:

In regards to dust collectors, I've got a bunch! JX3P because I don't have the remote programmer, it sounds great though. ASRX (the black one) because I need the final OS update though I recently pulled it out because the FX are amazing. The whole line of Electrix stuff (I just don't have the room for it). Boss DR660 (no room for that one either).

I'm afraid that the Moogerfooger LP filter is collecting dust. Once I got hold of Solaris and MiniMax, it was all over.
Let's see...the only other thing in my studio collecting dust is a Korg N1R, but it's in a rack so I don't think it really does.
I only keep it around for a couple of sounds in a couple of old projects.
Here's the weird thing: my Ensoniq KT-76 has a broken computer. Most of the time when it turns on none of the front panel buttons work, except once in a while when the computer boots up correctly. So I waited until the computer booted up correctly, and then I left it on permanently, so now it's on 24/7. I should get it fixed, but I haven't gotten around to doing it yet, and in the meantime it's working fine.
Boring studio stories....

In my studio the dust falls on a bag holding a Korg Poly Six. I bought it years ago but without a power adapter.
So I bought a cheap power adapter but it doesn´t fit to the connector. Then I tear off the cables that comes from the battery shaft and connected them directly with the power adapter.
The power adapter was unstable and killed the electronic of the Korg.
Also I have an old yamaha psr 150 keyboard standing around, a friend of mine gave it to me, without any power adapter, again. I have never tried it.
Beside the yamaha there is my first keyboard, a casio mt-750. My mother gave me that as a birthday present.
It was my first contact with a keyboard.
I really loved the small edit function for the sounds, my favourite where a string sound with a long release time, but after two or three chords the max. polyphony was maxed out and I lost the fun to play it anymore.
Finally I demount the speakers and built them
into my Hifi speakers, because I killed my high speakers of my Hifi, again.
My biggest dust collector is a B3-B, hapeless not a Hammond. It´s a Yamaha organ, sounds quite nice but I never used it in a production, yet.
Nice topic by the way...

my very first piece of gear, apart from my guitar stuff, was a second hand EmuSystems Emax II sampler. it has 2Mb Ram, a horrible sequencer, but also a 5oct keyboard, 8 outputs. got a cheap SCSI 100Mb HD for bank saving, no case for this, so it's just laying about somewhere.
i got it eight years ago. since buying a computer and pulsars three years ago, it has been my master keyboard for a while. but as it is BIG, i ended up buying one of these evolution midi keyboards. since then it has been around town a lot. lots of friends were interested, but you know... 2Mb of Ram...
gotta say, i did everything with this machine, triggered by a roland tr505 (which i sadly sold) for a few years. 2Mb can get you quite far actually. good sampling and setting correct loop points/envelopes was the key. i learned the basics on this machine though (sampling, filters, envelopes, modulation,...)
it's back at my place since a few weeks, still fully functional!
i liked it's orchestral bank and arpeggiator a lot!
casio SA-1 tone bank. borrowed it from my kid sister. never gave it back
used intensively by bands like TransAm. since i chose this one for my first 'circuit bending' (rather clumsy) experiments. since then the sound to noise ratio has been, mmmm, unworkable. even for my lofi kind of taste.
my PRS guitar had been sitting in the corner after buying my first CW card, but it was a shame to neglect such a beautiful instrument. it has been my most loyal companion again since a year. it hasn't been connected to an amp for ages. i really would love to have this 'naked electric guitar sound' amplified/recorded. well, recording it is quite easy, but how would you do it on a stage??? it seems a bit daft to mic an electric guitar, if possible at all, in a live concert situation. but that's another thread...
although my nordrack2 and Korg MS10 don't have much work (again, since buying CW
), i regularly clean 'm. they're really beautiful and i kindly let them waste valuable space.
