DVDRW

hello all

i'm about to buy a DVDRW but don't know which one will be the best. my system is:
Asus P4T mobo,
P4 1.4GHz processor,
1GB RDRAM,
1 Cdrw(will replace with the dvdrw) and 3 HD(40GB-80GB-120GB).
*is Liton Dvdrw is as good as Asus?

the liteon are very loud.. (like a starting rocket?)

the LG DVD drive supports -rw, +re AND DVD RAM...

what is the + - thing? is it different kind'a disk that will support? or something eles?

there are 3 different formats:
-rw, +rw and DVD RAM.
your new drive should support all of them

I confirm that. In addition, very slow (if you burn audio then it creeps like a snail after each song.....

No, most drives don't support DVD-RAM. DVD-RAM used a cartridge -- much like a zip disk, and you couldn't play it in normal DVD players. (It was for data transfer.) But now with all the new little USB drives it's obsolete.

DVD+/-R are almost the same thing; I really don't know what the difference is. You can play them both in normal DVD players, and most drives will read and write to them both. DVD+/-R are record-once, and DVD+/-RW can erase and record multiple times. I think DVD-RW is compatible with *most* players, whereas DVD+RW is compatible with *all* players. I'm not entirely sure about that; it's what I remember reading. If someone knows more feel free to write in!

There's no significant difference between +/-r. Those are two different systems that do the same thing using slightly different ways. These two standards appeared almost at once I think and none of them took over whole business so we got both. Some players support only one so try to burn in that format. Most recorders now support both. So it's all more or less in marketing.

Make sure the burner you buy supports both + and -. - seems a little more commonly used though. Look for a Pioneer DVD+/-RW drive. That would be my personal preference if I bought a new drive.

I am very pleased with my Plextor DVD. Very reliable and fast. But I would hold off, I think there is a new DVD comming out (or out already) that burns on both sides of DVD, doubling its capacity.

One of those would be cool but it will most likely be $400 or more when it comes out, whereas most DVDrws are $100-$150. I suppose it depends on your budget

Just to go against the flow on this one

I have a LiteOn LDW-851S. Burns +R at 8x and -R at 4x. No noise issues here at all, must be earlier models that had problems. There's a new version that burns + and - at 8x. Have been very happy with it so far and was extremely good value for money.

As a very rough and ready comparison between +R and -R, apparently -R is more "standard", as in supported by official DVD Forum. This means that it works in more home DVD players etc. AFAIK +R is better for data storage as it has improved error checking/handling. I use both, +R for backups and -R for video. Also the +RW is supposed to be better for a DVD-RAM replacement, but I don't bother using them as +/-Rs are so cheap (around 35p each here).
