I just need some space to try out my multimedia learning, that's all, but I know there are some that are very slow. Do you use a free one yourself?

I have spent some time trying to find the same thing for myself, but have come to the conclusion that what you get for nothing...isn't really worth the bother (unless somebody else knows different..?)

I think that it's probably worth paying a little money for the service, at the end of the day.

Nestor,

If you don't require a large amount of MBs then just try your search engine and type 'web hosting' and you'll find many paortals offer good conditions on web hosting for a small amount of money. I found such (in Poland). I pay 15 Euros for a half a year; this include a domain (in .com), 35MB of free web space and 25MB of e-mail space and an e-mail I choose (at my domain). That's quite cheap, I think. Even just for a rehearsals.

Geocities or Esmartweb.

The problem is the pop-up ads and slow bandwidth.

There are probably lots of others. Type "free host service" into your browser and see what comes up. Read the fine print before signing up with any of them.

Have fun!

Thank you guys... I'm new to this world, so I just wanted to know if you had any more knowledge that myself.

Of course, you are right people, it worth to pay the price when you have to do something serious, no doubt. I just want to upload little web sites I'm building to experiment, that is why a free page is perhaps appropiate for the moment.

I went to: http://www.netfirms.com/

They have very good prices as well, if you need to host something bigger. I'm surprised at the good prices for such a big amount of Mb, but they are perhaps a bit slow.

Thanks very much for your introduction to this.

In your experience Spirit, how much bandwith would a busy site use per month?

As the old saying goes: How long is a piece of string ?

What's a "busy site" ?

The only thing you can do is estimate traffic based on the size of your files.

For example:

- do you expect people to visit a lot of pages on your site, or only a few
- what the average size of a page ?
- do your pages contain large files - such as multiple pictures ?
- will you be offering large files for free download of 1Mb+ ? This will make a big difference.

An acquaintance of mine runs a popular IT site with a lot of international traffic. It is mainly text but also quite a few little pics. I think he does about 10Gb - 15Gb a month. But then that is a popular site - he makes his living from it. He has no MP3 or multimedia content.

EDIT: Maybe you could ask John how much bandwidth he uses on the Z and this would give you an idea. I'd classify the Z as a popular site

Cool answer Spirit, I understand it well now...

What I also understand is that it is not easy for a page to be popular, not at all in fact. Not a least in the long term. Some may be buzy for a couple of months, but then hits goes away.

If a populsar site is ok with about 10GBs month, this will for sure be enough for me, when I first do my own.

And what about space? How much space do we need as musicians if we want to show part of our work in mp3, put some graphics and quite a lot of text? I guess just making a rough calcule, about 350 to 400 MBs.

Thank you very much Spirit

Prices have come down quite a lot in the last 3 years I can see, cos there are many more Servers out there... Quality is also better, most of them offer very good equipment as I can read... As the one you have just pointed out up here...
