Hi All,
I'm a Logic user (Plat.v5.5.1-PC ver), who also has a Logic Control, and I was very happy to see Emagic & Mackie recently 'kiss & makeup' regarding their differences with the Logic Control & the Mackie Control.
The result is we now have a third version that replaces both the LC & MC, called the Universal Controller. Hardware-wise it's basically the same thing, but now it's capable of running as a Logic Control, a Mackie Control , or in HUI mode for Pro Tools.
This is really cool....but what would be further icing on the cake would be the ability to use the UC with SFP.
I'm going write to CW to see what their response is......any other LC/MC/UC owners out there care to follow this up as well ???

Regards Dave.

I just have a Peavy PC 1600 as controller, but I would be very interested in a UC SFP controll, that's for sure

I too use Logic but have been reluctant to purchase the LC. The documentation of the features for it seems a little vague. Can you control CC data with the sexy P+G motorized faders? If so, it seems as though it may be a perfect solution.

Hi!

I the studio with my friend, we have a Radikal Technologies SAC-2.2 that support it all: Logic Control, Mackie, HUI, Protools + a couple of template based on CC like reason templates, Pulsar templates, and a couple more.

This thing is really cool, we really use it all the times. Mostly in Logic Control mode. But we can't program CC# ourself. We have to use what's allready programmed into it...

And, i would not buy this today, nor a logic control. I found the price excessive compared with what i can get for about the same price today.

I'm closely looking at the Tascam FW-1884 these days. It support all those thing (logic control, mackie, HUI) + it has a 4x4 midi interface on it, it's also a real digital mixer + couple of other things, like 8 mic pres adat, spdif and insert points. For about the same price as a logic control.

And, using those 4 midi ports, with the FW-1884, you can really use it to send CC# and make your own midi control templates.

Personnaly i would look more into this direction than a bare'fader controller' like Logic Control. Also, in the same price range, you can also have a look at the Yamaha 01X mLan digital mixer. It does the same thing, Logic Control etc...

My .02 cents

Personally I think if you're armed with Creamware and Logic I think that investing in an additional digital mixer is a bit overkill (as was once pointed out to me).
Better converters & preamps can be had separately if you rely on what you already have for mixing (not to mention that logic/sfp combination is quite excellent).

I have to admit that I've been waiting for a while to see a mod for the Mackie or Logic control that allows you to use them interchangeably. The fact that they can both be upgraded (or bought new) to do this and still be within warranty has me more eager than I care to admit. I was initially ready to buy an LC just before the Apple buyout and that money went to a Virus instead. Now my biggest problem is limited i/o but I know what my next purchase after an RME unit is...

To marcus,
Yes you can use other digital mixing devices to control Logic, but AFAIK they don't have the depth of control that the LC does with Logic. You can pretty much control and automate everything from a LC within Logic, whereas the intergration of Mackie Control with Cubase/Nuendo, Samplitude, or Cakewalk is not nearly as comprehesive (I might also add, as of this moment, Emagic had a huge headstart to get the LC working with Logic before the MC came out)

Yes a digital mixer gives you an added bonus of onboard converters, but if you're in the 01v range they're what I would class as ok (acceptable). Personally I went for the quality not quantity (Apogee 2 channel) in addition to A16 Ultra.

All i'm trying to say is that there are options aside from LC that are also totaly valid, often more versatile and compatible.

Some add alot more features to the package than a midi fader box for not much more.

And i need some of those features.

BTW, the fw-1884 IS lc compatible AND also support other mode like mackie, hui and protools. Since i won't be moving to MAC anytime soon. I better check for a replacement for Logic.

So it's more of a control surface for me than a mixer. Still, with it i could control up to 5 apps including sfp using it's 4X4 midi where lc can control only one, and that Logic itself or and other mackie control compatible host.

The mixer would still be pretty usefull like for onsite recording or live gig, for monitoring thru a set of speakers or onboard headphone amp.

Anyway, i find that it fits my needs. Maybe it does notfit yours
