here's a quote from their website:-
Steinberg wrote:Once we have received your proof of purchase, we will send a personalized Link to the Steinberg Online Shop to the email address you have provided. By using this link, you can obtain the Cubase 5 Grace Period Update for EUR 19.90 (incl. 19% VAT, plus shipping costs), or respectively the Cubase Studio 5 Grace Period Update for EUR 14.90 (incl. 19% VAT, plus shipping costs).
Wow ok, that is really nice!

If they'd thought about it clearly, they could have made customers very happy with a grace period scale. Something like:-
3 months - EUR 19
6 months - EUR 69
12 months - EUR 119

Yeah, I bet they DID think about it - with EURO tinted glasses...

I don't find the upgrade price to be expensive but I wish that they were less frequent. Version 5 has more features I need than previous upgrades. The SX 3 version was my least favorite recent upgrade. That one seemed like just a money grab.

that's why a company like Yamaha doesn't put all of it's developements into a upgrade. that way, they have something to put in the next upgrade, and can charge money again. smart, but evil.

they understand how the mind works and have teams of marketers to discover a way to use trickery to get you to spend money and feel grateful to get to do it.
perhaps, this will be an upgrade i take advantage of, but at the current rate of renumbering, perhaps it won't be until Cubase 7....

I am interested in all the new features but especially VST Expression and the new tempo track which seem specifically geared towards orchestral music.
Low latency for all
Cubase 5 takes full advantage of the latest WASAPI* audio driver technology in Microsoft Windows Vista and supports generic and on-board sound hardware with lower latencies than ever before.
Gary you said I would have bad performance from onboard S/PDIF, we will see
and they finally added a good drum machine!
New automation handling (seems about time for this one too)

no, i don't necessarily think you'll have bad performance from onboard sp/dif...

IMO - from what little I know of WASAPI - is that it's basically M$ implementing an ASIO-type core protocol in order to 'hijack' (or lure) developers away from paying the so-called 'Cubase tax' / licensing fee (
http://www.steinberg.net/de/404.html) - which is probably not the case anyways.
(Hard to believe that Magix Samplitude/Sequoia would pay an ASIO licensing fee to Cubase <hehe>)
Crazy industry.
Greg
p.s. If I can remember history, I think I remember M$ promoting similar 'lower latency/higher performance' capability when they decided to embed MIDI further up into the OS way back when. But what do I know?

Microsoft doesn't really care about musicians the way Apple does. It is more of an attempt to make VOIP and streaming radio work better. If there is too much lag, it really screws things up.

I watched the full Cubase 5 video. All of their engineers are 20 years old!

Strange indeed. If they're all only 20 that would mean that none of them bar the odd child genius have degrees & that they have little to no experience. Obviously some might be naturals in maths & programming, but even then, if that's true regarding the age of the cubase developers I'd be very surprised. I think it's a piss take.

The upgrade is cheaper than the SFP 5 and it feels like you are getting more. SC has to charge a lot because not so many people want this.

strange from 198 to 199, the upgrade of cubase is 1 euros more than the SC >upgrade (as it was announced at 198 € if i remember well, i could be wrong, but i asked my supercalculator brain to calculate 199-198 and the difference is 1 euros in favor of SC
not sure about dollars, you have to take exchange rate at a said date and make a monthly/yearly average, may be take into account bank commissions and such... it's different
