Personally I would love to hear a prophet with the CS80 filtersection swapped in, all with polyphonic Aftertouch..........

i would rather hear good filters and sound synthesis from John Bowen than from a VSTi-based Arturia creation - i have to say i've found their emulations lacklustre and i don't think their filters are the best. They use marketing bullshit terms like TAE (we're not buying bloody ageing cream with some dodgy 'science' attached Arturia - we're intelligent musicians). i'd rather have good sound than poly aftertouch, but i have asked John if he can fit a ribbon controller on the Solaris - that's more of a deal maker for me.
I rather have the poly Aftertouch........but hey , I guess if you aren't used to poly AT, it would be no loss to you

....I am not just looking for a awsome sound module....I am looking for performance features as an extention of me......PolyAT is the Supreme Controller feature I look for.....others are,,,,, bells and whistles........

The ION and Micron do support it though, and are very fine VA synths in their own right.
I've got a nice ELKA master keyboard that does genuine poly aftertouch in my collection somewhere - but it's huge (bigger than the andro). For a while I was using this + a Kurzweil ribbon controller + the CS80V for the full CS80 experience....
the ribbon on the Andro is a huge part of what makes it so special - full 12 bit resolution across it's whole length (yeh baby) feeding real analog circuitry beats 7bit VA knobs and sliders any day
You are right about Alesis......Even my QuadraSynth plus responds to polyphonic aftertouch, although the keyboard only transmitted Channel AT.....
Imagine using this for Midi or Voltage controll

Every time I've seen a pic of that modular, I've thought it was the most unmusical-looking thing I've ever seen.

actually, what you see, is just one part from the enterprise main bridge control.

The Haken Fingerboard is awesome. I have seen it in use w/ the Capabara, and it's a great way to perform. It works well with real time apps like Kyma, and Scope.
The performance seminar was @ the college here UNLV, and their expeimental music class. It was used along with Ableton Live playing and mixing pre recorded loops, and triggering different audio treatments on the fly in Kyma. Stricty advanced concepts, but I could imagine myself viewing a show @ the Planetarium while listening.
This would be fun to experiment with, but I still prefer more conventional performances.

do they pay license fees to H.R. Giger for that stuff - or were they simply 'inspired' by his designs ?
might as well have called it Harkonnen-Audio

The CS80 had
16 of these filters with independent Aftertouch and a CS exclusive Envelope ...How would you approach this???
It is not the Sound but the Control that made the CS80 what it was famous for
it is awsome

Anything multi timbral can be played on this 3D controller....each "note on" gets it's own midi channel, and the keyboard tracks each finger until it is lifted.....

A big credit card...
Or perhaps Solaris will add Yamaha filters.

Solaris has unfortunately rolled over and shrugged on the "PolyAftertouch" Question by saying it is to expensive...So If they get CS filters, the sound will be nice but the expressive control will be gone......They also don't want multi-timbreality
BTW Arturia Origin Keyboard only transmits channel aftertouch, but the Brains and filters do respond to polyphonic midi messages so my quest is not in vain with Them.....they support 4 seperate instruments and are multi-timbreal
And the Sharc DSP should quieten all of the "Anti-aliases" you want to throw back at me.....

there is no Sharc DSP inside the Arturia thing - it's 2 TigerSharcs
afaik the 'regular' Sharc audio library doesn't exist for the latter, which originally had a completely different target market.
They don't even share the same machine code
I don't care if a processor does aliasing or not - in fact I like the converters in the original DX 7 and I'd defend the Waldorf Wavetables' aliasing any time against fake-smoothing them by increased samplerate... butt
the point is that Arturia (or their Press agents) claim that their processing is sooo good and sooo analog-like that aliasing doesn't exist. Rubbish, as usual.
If you have cash to spend it's no my business - I contribute some impressions because there may be more people asking themselves similiar questions about what to buy
Solaris has been introduced at the Messe with say 15% of the features available and it was deeply impressing - even more when some visitors who were more sophisticated than myself played it.
It IS a new dimension in Sharc sound
Arturia is just warming up a stew of their PC modules - and they ALWAYS have promised more than they eventually fullfilled - the decision is at the customer
cheers, Tom

Hi slammah,
I don't think I ever said the Solaris would not handle poly AT over MIDI, or that it was too expensive - the real problem is that there are no available keyboard beds that we can purchase to put in the Solaris that can send poly AT, as far as I have been told.
re: Multitimbre capability - Actually, I did post that we are hoping for a 4 part capability, but I can't promise it for the first release yet.
regards,
john b.

Thats great news if you are implying It will respond to polyAT over midi...
and the multitimbre news is also new to me.........
I must have been looking at your older posts recently ....

The only recent controller made I am aware of that has Poly AT keyboard was the MC3000. It has 64 programmable curves, 12 which are factory, and 48 user. I bought it for it's ability to run racks full of synths and samplers, 128 MIDI channels, and 8 x 2 MIDI patchbay.
When I use it w/ Solaris you can hear it's POLY AT @ work. I asked John if I had discovered a neat flaw at first as I was baffled by the way I could use one preset, and w /the left / lower four voices, have an evolving pad, and the right two voices strike harder giving me louder, brighter sound. But all in the same preset which was an evolving attack when played soft, but at higher velocities shortens the attack. It is my favorite swell pad @ the moment. When I use the right amount of velocity, all of the notes swell at seperate times instead of being re-triggered.
It is definately a great performance feature. It gives the illusion of a 2 zone synth all in one preset. That is why it is so desirable to me. But it gave me a hernia in Janurary with it's 100 lb. weight, and 40 lb. anvil case. That is it's Achilles Heel. But my rig on the big jobs will use the MC3000, the Solaris ( hardware ), and 2 x KS 88's, along with the 28U SKB Main Battle Tank.

POLYPHONIC aftertouch is an awsome control feature, which is strangely found in heavier synthbeds....(less the SQ80 type)
But the weight is not in the polyAT switches and circuitry, but the Asses of todays lazy keyboard manufacturers who only desire selling to the rotations of entry level musicians, as that is the deepest pocket of ching for them...
