About Studio monitors...again!...
what i tell myself is..
make your best guess and do some work....unless you have a lot of money.if you do have a lot of money, then buy a number of them and switch them around occasionally.this is what happens in big studios where different clients have different requirements.also,NO monitor is "perfect".
become a better listener and don't rely strictly on machines.music is for humans, who are by nature,unreliable...the wrong thing is often exactly what they(or you)like....relax.

Hubird, I did the same and tried to find out what exactly caused that impression. On 2003-04-14 12:12, hubird wrote:
I checked again the test mentioned before.
...to these and make your personal choice:
Mackie HR824, Event 20/20bas, DynAudio BM6A, Genelec 1030APM, and A.D.A.M. P11-A.
...
If economics are involved the two winners are Event PS-6 and Klein+Hummel O100.
I usually read a lot of tests but rarely find myself so convinced in such a way - I would have ended with a couple of ADAMs if I'd been shopping afterwards

First they did not give the list you quote and suggest to make your own choice, instead:
Conclusion: we got two winners ADAM P11 and Genelec 1030.
After several lines about the winners:
...we can honstly suggest Dyaudio BM6, Event20/20, Mackie 824 and K+H O100.
If you don't like one of our winners then you'll certainly find one among these...
The number of lines with positive/negative expression in the review text:
Genelec: 16 positive lines, ADAM 20 positive lines, no negatives for both.
Dynaudio: 4 positive, 7 negative about packaging, 3 negative about sound.
Mackie: 3 positive, 2 negative, 5 lines about the similiar look of the Behringer, 12 lines total (!)
K+H O100: 5 positive, 4 negative lines about sound, 15 negative lines about an 'annoying LED'
Event: 6 positive lines, 5 negative lines.
Would you expect anyone to really consider one of those as an alternative after reading that

sorry for drifting somewhat from the topic,
cheers, Tom
that's correct Astro, I just mentioned the top five of the test, to show us on planetz some best-of to choose from.
To inform you guys:
The authors of the test explain they didn't test with electronic test gear, instead they made a 'subjective' but very systemized listening test, with several types of source material and with several people, comparing all the tested models.
They gave judgements about the Hi, Mid, Low, the "Aufloesung" (performance?, Astro, translation please
), Stereo performance and Total impression, where the last could deviate from the average of the former test parameters.
I liked the 'musical' approach of the test, the 'subjective' approach gave me more information than a 'objective' test could have done
I did a listening test in a shop, with special attention to the Mackies, the Genelecs and the Adams.
I agreed to the test results.
About the well known and proved Genelecs and the new Adams: they were very, very identical considering the frequencies balance and overall performance, but switching between them was an amazing experience.
The reason for the unbelievable open sound and precise definition lays in the special tweeters which can produce frequencies up to 32 Khz, unhearable, but this overcapacity works very well.
For who's interested in the technics behind the tweeters, I like to quote from de Adam website:
The A.R.T. (=Accelerated Ribbon Technology) tweeters and midrange units take a completely new approach in kinematics to move air and improve the quality of music reproduction.
Based on the original works of Dr. Oskar Heil, who invented his "Air Motion Transformer" back in 1972, new electroacoustic transducers have been developed that are based on improved layouts and new materials. The membrane consists of a lamella like folded diaphragm whose single folds move according to the alternate current, thus squeezing air in and out. All other loudspeaker drive units, whether they are voice coil driven, electrostatics, piezos or magnetostatics, act like a piston, moving air in a 1:1 ratio. This is undesirable, as the specific weight of air is much lower than that of the driving mechanics.
Speaking in terms of electrical Engineering one could say there is a bad match between source and load. The A.R.T. principle achieves a 4:1 velocity transformation between driving diaphragm and driven air, i. e. the air moves in and out four times faster than the folds itself are moving. This superior "motor" is responsible for the enormous clarity and transient reproduction that is to be heard from the A.R.T. drive units.
[end].
Yes, I like my Adams
I hope I didn't bother you.

Hello to all!
I was ill for some days and I have not checked the thread I created. I see a lot of people have responded
Thank you all for your ideas...
I still dont know what to do with the monitors though. The BIG problem is that the only ones I can listen to are the Tannoy Reveal. I could not find the Mackies or the ADAM in order to listen to them and compare. I neither was able to go and have a listen to the Tannoys (as I was ill) - I ll do so today. I like the ADAM monitors for some strange reason (since I dont know them!) but what I dont like is that they have only an XLR input, while the Mackies provide TRS and RCA too (my Pulsar has the classic I/O option). I dont know which of the three...
Now, as far as the Iraq War is concerned... first of all Thanks God that it has finished (more or less). What I have observed is that no matter what the civilians around the world say... no matter what the other governments say... no matter what NATO says, mr. Bush and his friends are not giving a shit (sorry to say it like that, but that is the truth!). I observe too that they have persuaded through propaganda the vast majority of the American people that what they are doing is the right thing to do. If you believe that the Americans are 'liberating' the Iraqi people you are wrong! Nobody denies that Sadam was a hard and bad dictator and that he shouldnt get punished. But the American government should not be the "police" of the world. Who told them that they are? Especially when NATO exists? If the US government do whatever they want, who knows if not tomorrow they decide that they want to bomb YOU (yes YOU!!) in order to "liberate" you?... There is not any reason for us, people around the whole world, to vote or decide about anything again. The US government has kindly decided for our selves..
The world is so beautiful and colourful, there is no reason to look at it in black & white. WAR is not the solution.
And yes, I may sound angry against the US government (and I am) but this doesnt mean that I am going to see the world in 2 colours like they do. But neither am I going to let them fuck my ass. Not without my permission. Dont let them do whatever they want. If you can think of some way to stop them, act! But dont ACT like them! NO WAR! NO VIOLENCE!

Rodos, for the (un)balanced XLR connection check this site, it's really perfect:
http://www.rane.com/note110.html
It's a pity you can't have a listening test in a shop.
You could however call or email with a good shop to ask for another advice.
I bought them at Music City /Koeln/Germany, check http://www.music-city.de
The guys in the big studio monitor listening room are good and know what they are talking about.
Just ask what's the difference between the (comparable) Genelecs 1030 and the ADAMs P-11 and see what they say.
I remember how they kept looking to my and my friend's faces when we started switching between both systems...
We, shocked, looked back to them, they looked streight in our eyes and just said, 'we know, we know...it's unbelievable'.
If you buy the ADAMs, you sure won't regret, I can promise you!

Michu, i always respected your opinion on so many things, but i'm now totally disillusioned. i mean NS-10s, really, how could you?they may be nicest people in the world, but if they pay taxes in America, then part of their income is directed to US military budget.
Anyway i know shite about monitors, i use NS10s

I think we'd better end this topic -- it has become a dual-subject thread that is really going nowhere. People are going to argue about politics and speakers until the world ends, and we're wasting Internet bandwidth.
As for speakers: get what you think looks and sounds the best (and has the flattest frequency rating).
As for Iraq: I don't want to hear about it anymore!!!

hi Tony
how are you?
heh, when i bought them, i had choice basicaly between Yamahas, Reveals and Spirits Absolute 0
and back firing port was serious concern for me.
Anyway i kind of dig that kind of sound as i think i prefer excelent transient response over flat frequency response or reproducing sublows.
Anyway, why don't you find some time and drop into #pulsarmusic on efnet?
