yesterday watched a TV feature about a Marianne Faithful performance in Paris in front of a small audience.
No playback, all live, phantastic musicians and sound. The guitar player squeezing cutting solos out of a Telecaster a very nice effect when the group members did the background chorus through an ultra-deep lofi reverb.
They also had a young french band in the event, playing (among owns pieces) a version of 'Broken English' right in front of the composer and succeeding.
Well, it was simply a relief after all those casting show euro contest crap
So, there's still good music around, but to quote from Marianne, who was also interviewed '... always been shite in the top twenty, never been really different...'

If you were to put out, say, Tarkus(Emerson, Lake and Palmer) today, it would be an internet icon at best. But it was a huge success when it came out in the early 70's.
If "Hit me baby one more time" by B-b-b-britney had come out in the 70's it would probably been a major flop as it would have been too loud for the disco crowd.
Cultural context is very important to whether a song will make it or not. Disposable music is the stuff HSS is geared towards in my opinion.

hmmm, what would have been Tarkus without it's cool cover design ? I find myself constantly tempted to buy it, if I find one in mint condition.
The 'Britney Hit Me' isn't so bad imho (a great production anyway) and of course the video has it's impact too.
I love the scene the pencil - must have done this a million times myself in school.
What makes it so annoying is that they repeat it to death and dare to even make that a theme itself 'oops I did it again...'
Not to forget the embarassing quality of Brit's live 'performances'
In the 80s there was a Pat Benetar hit 'Love is a battlefield' which I find somewhat similiar from production, but way better perfomed.
Today most of the music seems to be decreased to background noise for 'just wanna be cool' video acting.
