Hi all,

Is the S/TDM cable REALLY needed when 2 or more Creamware cards are in the same computer?

I currently have a Scope Project in my PC. Very soon I'll be getting a second-hand Scope Professional. That card will come without an S/TDM cable... I would like to put the Professional card also in my PC next to the existing Project card WITHOUT an S/TDM cable. Is that possible? Or do I have to wait until I have received an S/TDM cable? (I still have to order it online from a store and delivery could take up 1-2 weeks I guess...)

I don't know if operating 2 cards without the S/TDM cable is just technically impossible, or that it DOES work, although a bit 'slower'. It's just for a few weeks before I'll receive the S/TDM cable...

Thanks for helping!

Yes, the cable is required.

It the means by which the 'virtual environment' of each card can communicate with the 'virtual environment' of the other cards in the system.

e.g. if you have a mixer rendered on the DSPs of one card, and try to connect your minimax (rendered on the DSPs of a different card) to that mixer, then this cannot happen without the S/TDM cable.

edit: whereabouts are you based? I might have a spare one that I could post to you, if you send me the your one (or my one) back when yours arrives.

You don't need 2 cables for connecting Project to Professional. You only need one.

CWA tech support advised me earlier this year that the fewer S/TDM cables, the less likely you'll run into "stability problems".

I ran fine with 1 cable until I started getting "not enough S/TDM connections from board 0 to board 1" messages. You have to have a lot of virtual cables wired up before you'll get these messages, though. And Infinite Vortex sent me the S/TDM cable for free. Thanks Shawn!

Anyway I haven't had any "stability problems" with 2 bus cables; but unless you're sure you'll need the extra bandwidth, I wouldn't worry about it.

Cheers,

Johann

Hi all,

I have just bought 2 S/TDM cables from my dealer! Fortunately he had 2 on stock!
So, I'm going to plugin my second Pulsar now and see what happens...!

BTW: the S/TDM cable has 3 connectors. When connecting just 2 cards, do you
always have to use an outer and the middle connector? Or is it possible to use
both outer connectors and leave the middle one unused? The question is for situations when the two cards are not in slots near each other.

Thanks!

Hmmm... Check the manual, I had the impression that CWA advises connecting the outer connectors. (I don't have manual available at the moment to check, though.)

any would work
but prefer the first and middle.

Following CWA's manual, I took the outer connectors. It works fine.

Outer connections MUST be used for better operation. It's related to the cable termination issues, and it's a general rule for computer connections, confirmed by CWA(CW) people when I asked in the past...

indeed, it's about termination
why not follow the manual's recommendation for that matter?
